Description
Ok, so over the ages, i noticed that if there is one thing that space artists (especially newcomers) struggle with, then it has to be planet textures. Lots of them just cant get their planets to look good, cant find good textures, or simply dont have 3d studio maxSo i decided to throw everyone a bone, and i made a tutorial on how to make a somewhat realistic-looking planet using only photoshop. Be adviced that you need to have some basic photoshop knowledge to follow this, and if not, i suggest you spend 50 dollars on the adobe photoshop book, or read the help files that photoshop came with)
I made a JPEG tutorial because:
1) I'ts annoying when you have to change from photoshop to your browser, and vice-versa. With Jpegs you have everything neat in photoshop
2) I didnt feel like writing HTML
If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to drop me a line.
In addition, here's a tutorial on making rings. I see many rings and tutorials produced with the spiral tool and that's just terrible! Thanks for the effort... but that's just wrong.

The texture is a picture of a rock that I took. You can take a picture yourself or try to find stock textures. You'd be amazed what can be used. I once scanned a chocolate chip cookie and it made for a great texture (after some modifications, of course).

Wow this is really a good tutorial, and the results were just fantastic! Even thought I didn't follow every step of it (like making some layers overlay instead of screen).
This is brilliant! Thank you very much for making it!

Thank you so much for this tutorial. It's brilliant. It's so simple to follow (except that I didn't know how to convert a layer to "Screen", so my first few attampts were confusing ) and has fantastic results in hardly any time.
You've made me so enthusiastic about trying more, so hopefully I'll start having art on my profile soon!

I can get to transforming of the shadow and then when I try to make it so I can add a background it won't work. I don't know why.

Great tutorial. Best one I have seen . I happen to be stuck on the part where we try to eliminate the extra shadow so it doesnt interfere with the star fields and such. so i have the shadow layer with its visibility on but not selected. i have "base" layer selected and then I ctrl + click the layer and a dashed line surrounds my planet. I copy and paste the layer and i get a duplicate "base" layer. The problem is when I delete the original shadow layer the shadow is erased aswell. All the shadow erases and I return to my original color with the layer styles. Thx for your help

Half way when you say it should look like this and you have 3 images 2 planets and one of the layers. when I created a new layer what do I do with it. I dont get a black circle.
Also How do i add my light so i get the atmosphere look?
some steps are confusing if you could elaborate on those.
