Description Ok, so over the ages, i noticed that if there is one thing that space artists (especially newcomers) struggle with, then it has to be planet textures. Lots of them just cant get their planets to look good, cant find good textures, or simply dont have 3d studio max

So i decided to throw everyone a bone, and i made a tutorial on how to make a somewhat realistic-looking planet using only photoshop. Be adviced that you need to have some basic photoshop knowledge to follow this, and if not, i suggest you spend 50 dollars on the adobe photoshop book, or read the help files that photoshop came with)

I made a JPEG tutorial because:

1) I'ts annoying when you have to change from photoshop to your browser, and vice-versa. With Jpegs you have everything neat in photoshop

2) I didnt feel like writing HTML

If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to drop me a line.

In addition, here's a tutorial on making rings. I see many rings and tutorials produced with the spiral tool and that's just terrible! Thanks for the effort... but that's just wrong.

amazing tutorial! thank you so much for posting it.
I have a question about it though. When I get to the part where I need to get rid of the extra shadow, how do I copy and paste the 2 layers at the same time? I've tried many times and can't seem to figure it out.

dinyctis In reply to HightreeDesigns [2012-01-09 13:38:13 +0000 UTC]

You don't need to paste 2 layers at the same time. You just need to marquee select the base layer (to make the circle) and then erase on the shadow layer. Let me know if you need more help!

This is epic! Though I opted to use layer masks rather then erasing shadows and atmosphere... NON-DESTRUCTIVE EDITING ALL THE WAY!

Ease it you sissy!

I've been using masks for years now, though.

Canu plz send me the texture beacuse no matter what texture i use it always looks wrong once i apply the land layer to the planet base. Plus i can never get the clouds casue my texture looks messed up. Everything in this tut rox but i the first part with the texture should be provided

dinyctis In reply to dude5183 [2011-12-17 16:59:14 +0000 UTC]

I no longer have that texture, sorry. But there are tons of textures that you can use. At one point, I even used a scanned chocolate chip cookie and it made for a great planet

I followed this and it doesn't work on photoshop 5. At least up to the end of the Effect settings/color settings part. I simply didn't get the same result no matter how many times I followed step by step.

Oh, CS5!

With what parts are you having trouble?

Niohoggr In reply to dinyctis [2011-12-12 15:11:43 +0000 UTC]

Well my sphere - after adding the inner, outer shadows - looks much darker than yours.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to Niohoggr [2011-12-13 02:46:46 +0000 UTC]

There are a number of things that could cause this; from the size of your canvas to how much shadow you're applying. Can you upload a screenshot of what you have to your scraps and show me a link?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Niohoggr In reply to dinyctis [2011-12-13 17:46:59 +0000 UTC]

Since I followed the instructions so that every number bit is perfectly the same - down to the color values even - I don't know what could cause it.
There is really not much to see, the product of setting the shadows is way darker - ie. black and has a smaller solid center - than what the right side image has on your tutorial, while after I add the next step it turns to something slightly darker. So that when I move the shadow layer it turns out too dark. CAn't show a screenshot atm, but if this didn't help I'll make one as soon as I can.

Yes, please do. Seeing it is better than interpreting what you're writing.

Niohoggr In reply to dinyctis [2011-12-15 16:42:14 +0000 UTC]

[link] this is what I get. The only thing I added to it after the inner/outer shadows and glows is the plus 1 layer that's merged.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to Niohoggr [2011-12-16 03:25:48 +0000 UTC]

The shadow layer needs to go on top. Try that. I think that it's the sharpness of the inner glow that's making it look sharp like that.

To clarify: the left hand image already looks a lot like the righthand but smaller black middle.
