Description After starting this project over a year ago, I finally picked it back up and bit by bit over the past two weeks I've finished it An image of FireMan.EXE from MegaMan Battle Network, with an original environment I made (one of my firsts). For different angles of the environment, click here . For a wireframe of FireMan.EXE, get it here .

Using Softimage|XSI, the only texture used was for the bricks on the walls. Final render time was four hours, three for the regular pass and then another one for the reflective pass. The original image was taken to PSPXI to adjust the brightness, and after that the reflections were added to the image using XSI's FxTree. Four infinite lights and Final Gathering were used in the lighting, all of the materials are a blend of Phong and Ambient Occlusion, and the total unsubdivided polygon count was 338,603.

Interesting that you mention that... maybe its cause in rachet and clank there's large pipes you walk around, i can't remember much of the environment Thanks for the comment, favs and llama!

4 hours of rendering? on This single image?? Holy sh*t I never thought rendering models could take up so long how bout if you're doing a movie? wow

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dionicio In reply to Scarforme [2010-03-24 03:13:47 +0000 UTC]

In movies like Pixar's wall-e the render times can go thru the roof. Using tricks and smart techniques, it would take four hours to render a single frame. Then in the complex scene it would take forty hours for one frame... If I did some studying on render efficiency I could probably have cut back render time to maybe an hour or two, but my laptop isn't all that powerful either.

The studios who render CG movies usually have a render farm: many computers linked together to render parts of the movie at once. But it still takes a really long time.

I might some day! I don't know It would be cool to have these two facing off. I will probably work on my regular MegaMan in my gallery before going back to the .exe characters.

Brilliant work, Dionicio!
Having never played Mega Man myself, I only have a vague idea of what one such character might look like, but your work fits the bill.
Beautifully rendered and modeled scenery and character. The only thing I want to point out is that there's an awful lot of glow... Everywhere. Gets a bit confusing and distracts from FireMan.

Aside from that, it's a great idea carried out very well!

Dionicio In reply to cheaterguy [2010-01-27 04:09:01 +0000 UTC]

I have a glow on the red lights, a glow around those "reactor" bases, and then it's just the reflections--but the floor grid on the left is catching a lot of light from other lights. I'll have to change that when I re-render it (less reflections will make it a lot quicker too ) Thanks for favorite and taking the time to check out my work!

cheaterguy In reply to Dionicio [2010-01-27 20:07:56 +0000 UTC]

I'd agree with you. I also make the same "mistake", scaling up the reflectivity too high on everything... But I'm a nobbin, so that's beside the point xD
But I imagine that would shave off a lot of rendertime, actually! Might be worth doing some day, eh?
You are very welcome!

The architecture itself is fantastic, my only thing is that I think the metal pipework is way to shiny, perhaps because you would expect pipes near to a source of heat / energy to suffer from some degree of rusting / oxidation, overall very good piece though.

Dionicio In reply to viper9x [2010-01-26 13:43:11 +0000 UTC]

you are completely right! i wanted to give the environment a clean look, because in the cartoons and games you never really see anything dirty or rusty. but the reflections are unnecessary and even makes things look too busy. the door is especially too reflective. i might re-render it in the future with some improvements. thank you for taking the time to comment

JChoudhry In reply to Dionicio [2010-01-26 15:26:49 +0000 UTC]

Oh ok, I always thought of fireman as a skinny and tall Navi as far as I can remember, but on the piece itself, someone might have already said it, but I think there is too much reflection, especially on fireman himself and the metals, floors, etc. are toooooo shiny, but nevertheless, I love it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dionicio In reply to JChoudhry [2010-01-27 03:52:39 +0000 UTC]

Yep, I did make him a little thicker than what's featured in the cartoon, I guess I was trying to match the thickness in his sprite... But also wanted him thicker to give it a bit more character. I hate the thin disproportional appearance he had in the anime, it made him seem like a joke and I feel this give him more of the serious, badass look he deserves.

I think I might re-render this piece sometime soon, make it a little less reflective. But I will keep FireMan nice and shiny Thanks for the comments and the favorite!

Man the lighting in this is amazing, and I love the vibrant colors.Very good job. My only recommendations would be there should be glow lighting on the right to match the machinery on the left. That or render an AO pass to give it a little more contrast in the dark areas. If you do add more glow the lighting shouldn't be as intense as the left side so you dont take way from the character like you have it set up already. Also you could give the lava a little more contrast to make it pop, giving the overall image a little more depth, but it fits the level of realism of the image.I love the character also, maybe u could scale him to show all the geometry that is in him and to make him seem bigger in contrast to the background. I dont mean to sound picky, I just thought you gave me the time to help me out, so I thought id throw in my 2 cents.

Dionicio In reply to momomonk [2009-12-17 01:52:08 +0000 UTC]

Oh no man, thank you for the in-depth comment, I really appreciate it and your advice. I agree on several of your points... The reason for lack of lights on the right is that I didn't use any volume effects for the glow--it's simply post-processed from the materials visible. Since you can't see the material on the right at that angle, there's no glow. But I do agree, there should be a glow there. I had actually wanted to make the character larger to show off some of his details... but I didn't like how it blocked out so much of the environment and I really liked the perspective he's seen at. Looking over the piece now there's several things I would change, including the lighting all together, but I don't think I will do anything more with the piece. I am working on other MegaMan models right now though

Thank you again for the insight, it's not often that you find in-depth comments or critique on dA!

I thought I'd return the favor, even though i realized it was an old piece, i still think its a very strong one. Cant wait to see the new one, I love mega man, made my childhood very fulfilling in the gaming world. Post some WIP's so that maybe you can get a different perspective, yours really helped me look harder at my stuff.

Same here man, MegaMan 2 is still my favorite to play. I'll be posting a WIP of MegaMan soon, I'm still not sure if I want a 3D render for him or more of a 2D style. I'll be posting him in a couple different rendering styles, take people's feedback then.

nice~ I didn't follow Rockman after I finished 7, so I have no idea they brought back these old school badasses in Battle Network.

Really nice rendering, I wonder if the fire on his head is poly also? (or an image projection on a plane/grid?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dionicio In reply to pommegenozide [2009-02-26 00:06:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they redesigned all the old robot masters in the Network series... Battle Network spawned six games as an RPG. I would've preferred a more traditional take but it was still a refreshing new take on the series!

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, I appreciate it... Yep, the fire on his head is also polygonal. XSI's particles don't create very nice looking flame effects, and it just uses a cylinder that's twisted/warped in various ways, with a semi-transparent material on it. Thanks again

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pommegenozide In reply to Dionicio [2009-02-26 19:43:57 +0000 UTC]

I see~ may be I should look into this series a bit when I have time

And you're welcome, it's always good to see other 3D artists because I can see different working processes and learn from them. Good idea on the flames, and I take it that playing around with materials cost less rendering time than using the real particle too?

Cheers

MegaMan would be a great character to model and create
You could build scene after scene following the various levels of that game really...but like you said, who on earth would have that kind of time
