The key to catching lightning is patience. And a lot of luck. Basically, set your camera on a tripod and leave the shutter open for an extended time (I like to keep mine to 30" intervals). Eventually, something will show up. It gets easier after you've been doing it for a while now. There's a pattern to lightning so you can figure out when a cool one might happen.

Do! It takes a bunch of patience, however when the result is awesome, it makes up for all the scrap images.
