Hello everyone,Well it's done, we've managed to translate the Ubunchu Manga into English.

I've learned a great deal about translating Japanese to English using inkscape and gimp. It was not as easy as I thought it would be.

Why ubunchu and not ubuntu?
It's because the japs tongue can't spell it. The "T" sounds are ta-chi-tsu-te-to.
chi could be modified into cha-chu-cho

That's what they called it, we just transliterated it. The comic is Ubunchu because it's a cute word and Ubuntu is perfectly translatable into Japanese phonetics.
Plus it'd get confusing if the comic and the software were called the same thing.

Ubunchu. I saw the first episode of this manga in spanish -poorly translated-.
I laugh with the characters, and this manga is very enjoyable.

I wish we could have got the translations into a proper system of translations with the launchpad rosetta system, but we need new software to do it right.

I just got done reading the translation of the Unbunchu manga and I like it! It was a very enjoyable read and I liked the diversity of the three characters- from the highly experienced Linux user to the Mac user, to the Windows-using skeptic!
However there's one thing I don't quite understand: Why was the Mac user girl advocating for Ubuntu Linux? Is it because of Ubuntu's ease of use? (or so I've heard?)

Yes, she thinks Ubuntu is just as easy to use as Mac and she's not a Mac fanatic in that she likes Mac just because it comes from Apple. She likes Mac because it's easy to use.

Just posting to let you know I'm still alive,... a touch behind, but alive. ^.^
I think i did download your latest Sauce file since all the "Sound" text in the SVGs I opened were hand-drawn. Either way, having SVGs to work with always makes life easier, although I also have to hand it to Seotch-san for providing the original PSDs to download. That too made life easier, allowing me to focus on other things.

Tomorrow I will finish the "cute character" in the instruction page, and also compile and upload the Sauce so you can view and edit my work. I might also throw in a Changelog to explain any edits or spelling corrections I might have made that might be useful in the Standard Version. ^^
After that, though, I will need a small hiatus so I can finish another drawing I had before this. However, with the "cute character" completed, I can't see myself taking longer than EOD next Sunday to finish this.
But will talk more tomorrow. First,... need sleep. TvT'

Whatever Japanese I learned [or at least tried to] back when I was doing ad-hoc manga translations has long been lost, pushed aside by a flood of BASH script, Perl, Python, C and C++ commands i had to learn for all the projects I've dabbled in. ^^'
So I can't say for sure if the translations are correct or not, but doesn't seem bad to me. Certainly nothing to complain over. There are a few phrases every once and a while that don't quite sound natural (e.g., Page 1, Panel 3, the "It's bad, you know." sound), but I assumed these were simply literal translations from the original Japanese. Honestly, I'm too happy and grateful enough that this has been not only translated, but now actively promoted. ^^
Maybe it's just me, but if I know something is wrong that I have the skill to fix, I fix it. If there's something I want in something that doesn't have it, I add it. This is why I didn't have any qualms creating the RtL version -- I just wanted to get up and DO something. ^___^
So if said person [or people] complain about the translations but don't actually supply any instructions on how to fix it, well,...

...then it invites an analogy about figs, to put it mildly.

1) It makes all the Japanese text more easily accessible.
2) It clarifies a few things that may otherwise be translation pitfalls (e.g., the smiling thing).
3) I finally know everyone's name (Risa, Akane, Masato). I'm wondering now if it's their names that are shown in the cut-out kanji in Page 2 Panel 5. I guess I'll check it out later.

Ashamed to say I didn't have the whole day to myself, so I couldn't work on this project much at all. Only got to it in the dead of night when I was half asleep (still am, if not more so), but at least I managed to produce a passable vector sketch of the "cute character". Not done yet, though, she still needs shading, highlighting, adjustments and other things I'm too tired to do. Wouldn't dare show her to Seotch-san in her current state. >__<
Still, I'm happy that she's almost done, and I imagine it will be relatively smooth sailing after that with the rearrangements. ^^
Speaking of which, I used Kiten and some online dictionaries to look up the meaning of the Kanji in Page 2 Panel 5. Not their names as I had assumed, but here's what I think they mean:

Did the same last year, and the Inkscape/GIMP/Scribus/Blender/etc people seemed to have gotten a lot out of it then. Figured it could also offer some exposure to Ubunchu, and how our FOSS programs aided the translation. ^__^

Fufu, but of course. I'd say 99.5% of all my artwork is drawn in Inkscape, even all the stuff I haven't finished porting over into my DeviantArt account. ^^
And yeah, I had seen your vector versions of the cute penguin and Risa-chan's iPod, though. Wish I had been around at the time to comment on them. ^^
And I guess you are where I want to be -- I want to become a programmer so i can put my artwork in more interactive mediums. Three years of drawing nothing but static images would do that I think. -v-'

Trying is the problem, presentation, ease and want are all very important.
And I won't have nothing said against the logic of reproducing the same patterns (i.e. making this intuitive to use) for people who are not used to using computers in a technical manner. This DOES mean they need different interfaces, regardless of how us in the community feel that our way is the best way.
As for Arch? I wouldn't know never tried it. Doesn't have a good reputation in the ease of use department, but that's probably come along since most of the people that dismiss it last tried it.

Hello again! Thank you very much for translating this! How I wish I knew of this back when i was still in my old OS-tan forum -- I know at least some people would have gone wild reading this cute homage to *Buntu (and all the Windows/Linux in-jokes).
May not be too late -- certainly deserves mention in our OS-tan DA club. ^^
I'm a bit short on time at the moment so I'm afraid I can't thoroughly review everything for comments about the spelling accuracy or visual style.
I did catch from your blog that you have to flip the imagery -- and while I do understand the motive, it may not have been entirely necessary as nearly all the major licensed manga publishers in the US & Canada, such as TokyoPop, VizMedia, Brocolli Books, and Shojo Beat, now publish all their works in the original right-to-left format. Presumably as a "win-win" situation, since the publishers didn't have to spend so much time and resources flipping everything, and the readers got their much-demanded "authenticity".
Honestly, though, it's a minor detail compared to the fact that this is less a translation project and more a public service on your behalf. ^__^
For the work that you and the others put into translating this, I'd like to donate $50USD to the F/OSS Project or Linux/BSD distribution of your choice as a small token of my appreciation. Feel free to choose upwards to five such projects. ^^

Hey there, Yes I've heard people bemoan the fact that I've flipped the images. But to be honest, I don't give a fig about so called "authenticity", I care about native English readers being able to read it. Manger readers, well they're a special breed.
Not that I don't like reading Manga myself, even RtL; But I'm not that interested in it for my own production. The logic is missing since I know the subject well.
As for a project? I'm not sure, I do so much of my volunteer work right now and I'm trying to get members of the community to accept the idea of commissioning works instead of praying to developers and then donating after the face as an act of charity.
So if you want to invest $50 into something, commission an artwork from ~mimoly or ~meglyman that depicts something really cool for the FOSS world. Or you could commission a bug fix (pick one from launchpad) or a deb package request from jpds, or perhaps a really small feature in a tool you want. I know I'd like better translation in svg files available.

I can handle FOSS artwork myself (I'm still due to repackage my Vanguard cursor theme to all distributions, not just PCLinuxOS), so yes due to that and personal preference I think sponsoring a specific bug fix or feature request would be the best win-win for all. [my dream feature, btw, is animation in Inkscape due in v0.48]
When they ask, I'll tell them "Doc Mo Sent Me". ^.^

Animation in inkscape eh? well I tell you what, put that $50 into your own dream, get together with other people who are interested in that feature and raise the required $5,000 for it. I'll put in a $100 investment if you will and we can set up an aggregation funding project to get something real and useful into inkscape.
I think next time I'll create two versions, one RtL and the other LtR and then I'll moan at the RtL reader on the front page

Right now I'm writing where I can't download attachments, so I'm not able to review either your translation source or Seotch-san's original PSD. However, I would love to volunteer in creating an RtL edition -- not for the bemoaners mind you (don't give a fig about them either), but just for myself.
I love RtL manga, and have the will and the skills to make it happen. It's only a matter of licensing, and anything else I might not be considering at this time. ^^'

Hi! Sorry I'm late. Had to handle two prerequisites.... ^___^
1) Had to get back home first to my lovable Kubuntu PC... and a real internet connection. ^.^
2) Had to review all the source files to make sure I'm not talking up the wrong orifice. -v-;
After careful evaluation of Seotch-san's original PSD sauce and your SVG file translations, I'm absolutely convinced this is going to be not only possible, but very easy thanks to your work.
While there may be some instances where I feel it prudent to make some minor modification or a rollback to the original version style (such as in Page 1, Panel 1, where the background simply spells out "U B U N T U" and thus will be perfectly legible when reflipped), I think this is simply a matter of juggling the background art and your translated text.
However, where I will be putting some extra work will be in the Reading Order Instruction that I'd like to include between the Title Page and Page 1.
This instructional page is customary really, but it's also a good way to tell accidental downloaders of the RtL version that they're reading the wrong version (or it might entice them to try something different). It's also a nice opportunity to offer a little fanart to Seotch-san, as these pages generally contain a cute character illustration explaining the instructions. But I will touch base with Seotch-san about this though -- in the event I won't be able to illustrate one of the story characters, I can always default to a generic [albeit Linux-inspired] Anime character.

I would, however, probably advise against announcing this until I've at least offered a converted page to you first. Call it a "deposit" -- I may be psyched, but also have an embarrassing track record of broken promises. ^^'
After the "deposit", I can probably also supply some kind of timeframe for you. ^__~
