But from what I've heard Azulon was born the year when Sozin started the war, so Sozin had Azulon late in his life (age 82 to be exact).
So unless this takes place around 15-20 years after the war began, I assume you follow your own canonicity right?

I tweaked with the time line a bit, just to create more conflict in the story. Most everything else will mirror cannon.
