Description
While returning home today I went to get a train and could not help but be moved as this guy was shifted from the station concourse. We all know that there is a story here, I left the Stella can in though it ruined the framing. For some the gates are truly never open.

Very interesting shot !
This is very touching and very well done.
The colors are excellent here.
But I just wanted to say that I know some people that are just like him, and that doesn't prevent them from being happy, or from success in life.
Some actually run in stadium with artificial legs...
Anyway, this is still an excellent picture.
And it will surely make people think a little before giving their opinion.
Great work, and congratulations on the DD, it was worth it.

On the one hand, the guy who commented above me is an idiot.
On the other, this is a really sad piece. Sad, and touching. Art isn't pretty. That's why I love this. I've actually had ideas about doing the same thing.
And on the other hand (I'm a freak, I know), its almost exploitative. Imagine how it would feel to be a legless man, stuck somewhere, with people taking pctures of you.

This to me just looks like an invasion of privacy. You should be ashamed. Did you ask this guy if he wanted to be photographed in possibly the only home he knows. Christ, he was trying to drink a beer and relax... what a bastard you are. If anyone did this to me I would kill your stupid ass. You should go to him now, show him the picture and ask him if he wants royalties!!!

It's amaizing how much one image can touch you inside.
We see this kind of live images almost every day and most of the time we try to ignore them or not to think to much about it.
It realy sucks that this is part of this world but this is a brutal reality that has to touch you if you have any hart left inside.
Amaizingly sad image and I'm glad you share it with us, kind of know how you felt taking it to
Awesome capture

the image has an eerie theatrical aspect to it.
only.... it's happening for real.
i wonder sometimes if it's a matter of choice or not?

i'm sorry...but i can't say that this is a wonderful, or a nice photo
it's the simplist human element redefined...
it's a powerful & somber photo...
and i think the stella needs to stay
it says more about the reality of life...
but maybe i'm just getting old & sentimental

sometimes the real world is so close in front of us we don't know where to look.....especially since most would rather never confront it, preferring instead the womb of a couch and the umbilical cord of a remote control

Wonderful photo - from the technical view - because it's impressive "real-life-photography". But also a very moving and sad photo - seen from the emotional view.

This is a very moving shot. It's always hard with 'beggers' and the like, deciding whether to give money... it's all to easy to think "I work hard for a living, I earn my money, why should I give you some, you're not even trying, just sitting around like that."
But then you may stop and think... "But really... I had it quite easy, I had a good family, never really wanted for anything, was given every opportunity to do things, all I had to do was take them when offered... What's the story behind this person? Were they offered things? Did they get all the chances I got? Probably not..."
It's still hard though...
*Sigh*

Phenomenal photo, Doug. I really love the blur of the gate which sort of lends more to the idea of your title.... really love how the focus is on him... I like how you captured the smoke in the air around him. An emotional piece. It's difficult to see and we often turn away... but since you've captured it on film, it makes it more difficult to turn away.
Thank you for sharing this piece. Excellent work!

I must admit that I often have mixed feelings, most of them not good, whenever I get approached by panhandlers. But this is a fellow who probably never had a choice or a chance. I am all the more thankful for all that I have. And this makes me feel as though I have no right to complain about anything...
PS on a lighter note, I love Stella and had yet another nostalgic pang when I saw that can (screw the framing!)
