Description
Important discovery. Orrendorf and Watkins, working underground at 9:45 with light, found monstrous barrel-shaped fossil of wholly unknown nature; probably vegetable unless overgrown specimen of unknown marine radiata. Tissue evidently preserved by mineral salts. Tough as leather, but astonishing flexibility retained in places. Marks of broken-off parts at ends and around sides. Six feet end to end, 3.5 feet central diameter, tapering to 1 foot at each end. Like a barrel with five bulging ridges in place of staves. Lateral breakages, as of thinnish stalks, are at equator in middle of these ridges. In furrows between ridges are curious growths. Combs or wings that fold up and spread out like fans. All greatly damaged but one, which gives almost seven-foot wing spread. Arrangement reminds one of certain monsters of primal myth, especially fabled Elder Things in Necronomicon. These wings seem to be membraneous, stretched on a framework of glandular tubing. Apparent minute orifices in frame tubing at wing tips. Ends of body shrivelled, giving no clue to interior or to what has been broken off there. H.P. Lovecraft, At the Mountains of Madness.
After a marathon of audiobooks in the last weeks (Sometimes I'm little busy or lazy to read a book, so this kind of videos helps) which I had managed to find on youtube about some of the most impressive works of the cosmic horror of Lovecraft, it really gave me some impulse to draw some of the most aberrants and interesting beings that populate the lore of that universe, in this case an Elder Thing from At The Mountains of Madness, the creators of life on our planet who came from the stars one billion years ago, and that despite having been able to confront all kinds of indescribable horrors and powerful species, its civilization was eventually degraded until reaching the near total extinction before the appearance of man.

Their big mistake was colonizing earth, albeit they started earth life : leftover tissue from creating the shoggoths began to evolve.
On other worlds they prospered and the shoggoths remained docile & obedient, On earth, there was a WRONGNESS and one alien race after another warred with them, also the shoggoths became cunning & malefic, especially after the Kadathian mountains rose, to house something that the Elder Ones feared.
Lovecraft gave an exhaustive description of their anatomy.

It is the worst possible mistake to encounter an Elder Thing. They -butchered those Antartica explorers (2 survived, but only because they were elsewhere at the mo.)Somebody drew a pic of a victim of their attack on DevArt - but removed it because it was too grisly. Professor Lake I think...

It is also implied that the degradation of the Elder Things and the mal-evolution of the once brainless and programmable shoggoths, were due to a WRONGNESS in the earth. On other worlds their civilization flourishes and prospers, but the earth they now avoid.
In "The Dreams in the WitchHouse", the protangonist teleports to a world still run by the Elder Things and becomes unconscious when he glimpses 3 Elder Things lumbering towards him, along with old Keziah and Brown Jenkin.

What bizarre beings. Extremely alien, and yet almost beautiful in a way. A primordial monster from the distant past, yet with all the intellect of a human being, probably more so.

Elder Things are creatures who I think would be both terrifying and beautiful at the same time. Or at least, if one were to see them flying that would be the case. They look like they'd be so graceful.

The narrator of MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS came to realize that when faced by a shoggoth and Danforth edging ever closer to utter madness.Β

Totally cool!
I love Lovecraft's ATMOM!
Wish Hollyweird would do a faithful flick of it.
The Elder thing's city could be done with fractals which would be completely new for a movie.
Also, they could have the explorers place their hands on the hieroglyphs, and their minds would be flooded with the images and sounds of that particular era of the Elder thing's civilization, as if they were standing among the bizarre denizens.

My witches/wizards have a spell that would do just that - The Walls Speak spell, one of about 80 or so spells,
It's been a good while since I last referenced my own fan-fics as I quit cartooning, fan-fics,....
Your idea would be for the walls to have recorded the history , to be accessed by touching the carven wall...

I guess for give a sense of direction to look what is "back" and what is "front", taking into account that they are radial beings that probably would have 5 wings which 3 are folded inside the clefts of its body, for my part I did it because with the other 2 wings in front would cover the side arms of the body in the picture.

I know that problem, but it somewhat bothers me. As you say, five wings would be more logical. There should be a sculpture instead of paintings. I'll have to talk to my girlfriend about this, she's ceramicist
