Description
This is my second largest bead sprite creation to date. Gutsdozer, originally from Mega Man 2 for Nintendo (NES). More specifically, this particular sprite is from the lesser known compilation for Sega Genisis subtitled "The Wily Wars", which included a series of revamped Mega Man games. I chose this sprite remix from the Genisis version strictly based on the wider variety of colors. This bead sprite contains 16,582 beads between all the pieces.
Now, about the construction.
Rather than bead the entire piece as one solid bead sprite, I decided to try something similar to Ninja Gaiden 3-D. However, this piece used 5 layers the width of the foamcore apart. This picture is of a previous version of the piece that did not work as well as I wanted. As you may be able to tell from the third view shown, each layer is built up with perpendicular strips of foamcore glued by the edge to the faces that support their corresponding bead sprite piece. After surveying the overall structure to weight ratio, I decided this would not hold the piece well when hung on a wall. I decided to build it more like a topographic map, upon which each layer of beads would sit flat against foamcore and each subsequent layer of foam flat upon it's lower layer, with the base layer being the size of the sprite itself as a whole. This would permit a larger overall surface area between the layers to be glued together. More surface area means more glue coverage which equals a tiny increase in weight versus a much larger increase of stability.
Okay, I've rambled enough. I'll let the pictures do the rest of the talking.
Although now you ask, this is your second largest? What is the first? I'm glad you asked...however, I have not finished this piece yet so I have not had a chance to finish the next. All the pieces of this mystery largest bead sprite are beaded and ironed, I simply need to build it in such a way that it can be taken apart, at least by half, so it can fit into a car. It is approximately 150% the size of Gutsdozer and contains 22,664 beads between all 15 or so layers.
I will give you a hint: It is also from Mega Man 2 and it's unofficial initials are "SK".

I don't remember the exact total - I think the largest piece requires between 7-9 pegboards.

so, like, hold on: the next peice will have to be split in half to fit in a car. so this means that it would be twice the size of a car?

At this point, Skull Castle is finished [link] and wasn't as big as I though it would be. Basically, the original sprite took up most of the screen in the game, so I figured it would be too large to fit into a car (by a few inches) so I was going to design it in halves that fit into eachother for display and came apart for transport. However, I cut down the overall sprite before building it, so it was a bit smaller than expected. It fits nicely into a trunk now.

oh. i guess that 'twice the size' bit was a little silly. a few inches over makes more sense.

Ya know, for the longest time, I thought for sure I'd never see a beadsprite larger than KKJ's [link] Zeromus on dA. Congrats for taking that tile. I can only imagine how gargantuan SK will end up, being 22k beads & 15 layers.
What about renting one of those mini U-Haul trailers to transport "SK" to the VG art shows; the kinds you can just hitch onto a tow ball?

Well, I gotta figure out what's going to haul the trailer first - I don't own a car
