Description
PLEASE FULLVIEW! Sorry about the long load time, I wanted to show off the details. Finally done! This demon is constructed from different views of the same skull and piece of wood that I've used in all my still life drawings for art class this semester ([link] [link] [link] ). Part of the reason I chose those objects was that I thought they might come in handy in designing a demon, and when my teacher assigned us to do a "surrealist" image, I saw the perfect opportunity. This final drawing came out a bit different from the digital concept sketch [link] , but I like the way it came out, overall.
27 x 40, pencil & charcoal pencil, at least 12 hours.

Barlowe is, as always, a major influence on my work. Yeah, this piece did take a long-ass time. So long I missed the assignment deadline. Whoops! Anyway, glad you like it.

Nice! The fragment reminds me of Gnosticism. Very cool.

I had to look up gnosticism! Once I did, I realized how disturbingly accurate your comment was.

My God, this is incredible...Amazing detail, such a beautiful use of contrast in value...The torso of the being and the suspended elements above its body remind me of the "wings" of a stingray, or especially of the way rays were modified into "Jenny Hanivers" back in the day. So beautiful, you've really captured the entire design aesthetic and atmosphere of a Barlowe demon.
Is that "fragment" the being is contemplating part of its original soul? (I'm thinking of Barlowe's demon contemplating one of an unblemished feathers from its former angelic existence.)

I just looked up "Jenny Haniver" and that's hilariously awesome! Come to think of it, that's a pretty apt comparison, since the forms of this demon are largely based on a skull I found at the beach, which for the longest time I thought was a stingray (or a dragon). Someone finally identified it as a catfish, but still.
That's a good guess about the fragment, though I'm afraid my art isn't as theologically potent as Barlowe's Inferno. Let's just say it's... well, a fragment of something bigger.
Thanks so much for the kind comment, I really appreciate it.

Aren't they great?? I was telling Commander Salamander a while back that I'd love to do an entire ecosystem based on "monsters" like Jenny Hanivers, Fiji Mermaids, and those crazy, anachronistic illustrations of sea monsters and such from medieval bestiaries. I just love that stuff.
Catfish, that's fascinating...I never would have guessed! Though taking a closer look at the drawing, I can see it in the rays projecting from the vertebrae and in the porous quality of the bone.

Holy molars! That\'s some pretty insane detail and shading.
Why\'s it contemplating the beautifully-rendered fragment?

Hehe, much thanks (holy molars, I've got to use that XD). The demon's contemplating it because... well, it comes from somewhere the demon is vaguely familiar with. Can't say any more!

Wow, thanks so much! I've actually been trying to get away from overly detailed drawings, because I have a tendency to use detail as a crutch in my art. What I really want to get better at is realistically and evocatively portraying light and color... which seems to be one of your strong suits if you don't mind my saying so.

we could do a little trade of our skills but color is my weak point though, i've never been good at painting :/
