Description Save for a few minor edits and details, this drawing is done. I added some inkwash for shading, and I'm pretty pleased with it. It obscures some detail, but it gives the scene more three-dimensionality and atmosphere. The only thing that really doesn't look good here is the man's torso and head, because I captured this with a digital camera, rather than the scanner I used on the first one. I'm a bit at a loss as to what to do with the hooded fellow, as he now blends into the background a bit much. Anyway, comments are welcome.

went through my faves, saw "waiting room" so came by again to see whats new.
i said this on the first version as well:
HO-LY-CRAP!! it does look better and i am gonna fave this one as well.

I love to add as much detail to a piece as one can without ruining it. And waiting room is one of those images with detail that i simply stare at!

Holy Shit!! and here I thought I was good at doing detail omfg this is insane. I can't do backgrounds that well but I rock at character design. we should work together some time

Thank you. Those were definitely the most tedious, so I'm glad they paid off.

This is insanely detailed, you really went all out on the atmosphere, and I really like the fact that the hooded guy blends in, its a visual bonus for anyone who takes the time to examine the whole piece. I'd really like to see a scanned version, just so I can look at the detail close up.

Thanks very much for your comment! I've been spending so much time figuring out how to make the hooded figure stand out, I never thought about what potential effects blending in could have. As to your request, I could certainly post a larger scan if you're interested.

That would be awesome, I'd like to see this drawing close up. Your artwork is incredible, I hope to see more in the future. Oh, and if you get a chance let me know what you think of my other stuff, I'm anxious to hear your opinion.

You see how the bold shadowing of Death's "perch" makes it come forward and grab our attention? You might consider applying a similar boldness to Death to bring him forward as well. If you didn't want to do something quite that extreme, you could just embolden the linework on his robes so that he's better differentiated from the background. At full-view size, he looks pretty good, but if it was me, I would probably want to make his linework heavier to make him come forward more. The rest of this drawing is simply exquisite! I love all of that texture in the stonework and in the background. Beautiful and morbid.

Ah, exellent suggestion. I'd been wondering how to make him more prominent. I think I'll try your idea. Thanks for the advice!

"Immaculate" Now THAT'S a great adjective! Thanks so much for you comment, I'm glad you like it.

You are very welcome. And I should thank you, while I am sad sometimes because there are *SO* many great artists on this site and I am *SO* lazy (and not spectacular) when I do see good art it gets me motivated. I'm still incredibly lazy though, but I look forward to being wowed by more of your stuff in the future

Aww, thanks! Ya know, I feel exactly the same way you do. I'm often amazed by other artists, and feel inspired, though too lazy to try and match them. It's wonderful to know that my small contribution to DeviantArt can motivate others. Though I've gotta say, some of your deviations definitely wowed me, especially "Holiday." Trust me, you've got spectacular to spare, you just have to run with it.

Holy crap, man...this looks incredible. It just feels so large with all of that incredibly-drawn architecture. The figures look fine to me--the hooded guy is a little lost, but he didn't get lost in the backgroud. You could always darken him a bit, if it bothers you. Incredible work, man.

good detail man, must take very long time, the only thing I see is the human figure, I like the shadow but the line itΒ΄s a little rigid, but itΒ΄s my humble opinion, youΒ΄re a great artist!

twistedmentality [2006-07-08 19:02:40 +0000 UTC]

looking good. the "hooded" fellow does blend more into the background. you can do one of two things....make him darker or make the back ground darker.

print it out nad work on him , this way if you mess it up its no big deal and if it looks good you can apply it to the illo.

ink wash...is that a diluted ink ? sorry ive never delt with inks before.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DSil In reply to twistedmentality [2006-07-10 05:16:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, making him darker seems like the way to go. I might try it out with Photoshop first to see if I like it. As to the inks, they are diluted to varying degrees. I kind of figured out how to get different tones as I went, and there was a lot of wiping off with a paper towel.

Thanks for the comment!
