Description
Man, I've been working on this piece forever. Or more accurately, I've been working on it in short bursts separated by forever. The paper is about 17" by 20", and crammed with detail. I'm sure there are many errors in perspective, and some areas aren't very well defined, but overall I'm fairly pleased with the piece. I do have a later version in which I've added inkwash, so I'll probably post that sucker in the next few days. This began way back in November as an assignment in AP Studio Art Class to do an interior or an exterior. Everyone expected me to do something wierd and horrifying, so I couldn't let them down. While I do have a fairly clear idea of what is going on in this picture, I'd rather leave its meaning up to your interpretation than beat you over the head with an explanation. It's not terribly subtle anyhow. Oh, and yes, the naked guy is me.Related content

The concept is incredible. There is so much detail in every square inch, and I like the composition. This is a very well-drawn piece. Thank you for sharing it.

Thank you for praising it so! Whenever I use microns, I can't help but fill my page with details. I've recently discovered the term for this tendency: "horror vacui." Come to think of it, that would be a pretty good title for a drawing.

Yeah, If I were to attempt something like that, i'd like stop halfway through and just forget about it >< I'm really bad with completing things.

I enjoyed the way the...um naked you reaches out to Death in an almost trance. I think you wanted yourself to be in awe of the Reaper of Souls, but this isn't hell. This is the reaper's home, right?

DSil In reply to Muse21 [2006-10-10 04:00:42 +0000 UTC]
I hadn't thought of it as the reaper's home, but that's an interesting interpretation. I thought of it more as a literal "Waiting Room" for the afterlife. Here the recently departed wait while the circle of Judges decides their fate, before the Guide of the Dead leads them into the next world. The idea of Judges of the dead comes from the Annunaki of Sumerian myth, and actually, I thought of the cloaked figure more as Charon--the Greek God who brings souls across the river of death--than as the traditional Judeo-Christian "reaper," which is why I avoided giving him the all-too-familiar scythe. Still, all this is just how I think of the scene. It's really up to the interpretation of the viewer, though.

That interests me because I have studied a lot of "reaper" myths. It's like someone shouted to the artists that if you put a skeleton in a black robe you get a great looking reaper and the artists went crazy. It's nice to see that someone can bring life to the old sketch.

Hehe, thanks! Actually, the only way I was able to follow through with this was because other people were putting pressure on me. It started as a school assignment, so I felt compelled to work on it, then I finished it because my Dad wanted it for a Father's Day present.

Heck! As long as it works! Pressure does get me moving when I need to. Deadlines will put me into action faster than anything! I need a push ocasionally!
