I use both methods and let me tell you, the pen tool takes a LOT longer than doing it manually.
Instead of looking at it like cheating you should look at it as another medium instead of acting like an elitist.
I have a tablet. I use the pen tool with the tablet sitting beside me and using my laptops tracker pad. Why? I like the result.
I am perfectly capable of using the tablet to create similar results but why dont I? I like having access to the paths afterwards in case I wish to scale it up for print.
Ever consider you saying you think it's cheating is incredibly hurtful to people who spend ages perfecting how to use it?
It's like a kick in the ribs.

Again, that was my personal opinion and how I felt about it. That's what it feels like to me when I'm using it myself.
I didn't state it was cheating. It isn't really my problem someone reading my comment would get awfully hurt by my opinion. And again, opinions aren't facts, so it doesn't mean using the pen tool is cheating.

Other pen tool tutorial author here~! XD
The real kicker is that I use the pen tool AND my tablet together. XD But again, unless you have talent, the pen tool is useless. All it draws is straight, smooth lines. What's more important is where your imagination takes this powerful tool and how well you harness it. In the big scheme of things, whether the lines are smooth or shaky, the most important thing is what you can create. Don't get lost in the details.

Yes, I know, I commented on yours, remember?
I do agree with that. But, still, for some reason, I'm kind of hesitant to use it. But, heh, might as well take it to good practice if I have it available anyway.

That's like saying it's cheating if you didn't make your own pencil from scratch out of wood and lead. Tools are tools. The pen tool requires a fair amount of skill to use, so I don't agree at all that it's like letting the computer do all the work. A lot of people are just scared of the pen tool for that exact reason: it takes years of practice to master. How can something that takes years of practice to master be done entirely by the computer? In any case, I'm also a fan of drawing by hand on paper, too, so I'm not knocking it either. But if you want to get into commercial art, the pen tool is really the only way to go because it will produce lines of perfection that simply are impossible by hand, no matter how good you are.

No, it's not. Because this pen tool is not a pen. It's just like selecting a path by clicking away and that's pretty much it.
On the other hand, using the brush tool is much more like using a brush or a pencil. You actually have to stroke and do your lines yourself to draw. Not click through a path.
I don't see how it takes a fair amount of skill to use, seeing this was a very simple tutorial for it. All you need to do is click your way through curves and lines, a few adjustments, and then simulate the brush. Years of experience? I don't think so.
The again, I was seeing it as cheating for an artist like myself that has a tablet and does hand-made artwork, and I rely on my own skills and improvement of my hands - the curves and lines that I can do on my own -, and not on a tool. I never mentioned commercial art.

Have you ever actually used the pen tool? I doubt it, if you think it doesn't take any practice to use. I taught Photoshop at the college level for 4 years, and the pen tool was always a very challenging tool for students. Very few of them mastered it, and it personally took me several years to get really, really good at it. Just saying.
There are all kinds of art. People thought the same thing about photography as you do about the pen tool, until they realized that not any person can just click a button and create an Ansel Adams. All different skills for all different arts. The pen tool could never recreate the nuance texture of a hand-painting, but a paint brush could never recreate the intricate detail of something like this[link] which took 8 months using only the pen tool.
Sounds like you won't be convinced, though. I've met many an artist like you who thinks that "real" artists don't do this or that, because they are better than people who create art professionally. But in the end, art is art, where ever you find it, and whatever you use to create it. It doesn't make one better than another. I'm only writing because I like to participate in the community dialogue. I hope you expand your mind one day. It'll make you a better artist.

You didn't get it, did you?
I never said that "real artists" don't do this or that. I never said using brush or pen makes someone better than someone else, nor that they are better than those who create art "professionally". I never said such things. I did say it was up to the individual, and personally, in my opinion, I don't like using the pen tool. I never said anything made other better than another.
And I am perfectly aware there are many kinds of art, and I never said one was better than another. Take your head off your ass and learn to read.

You actually kinda did. You called it cheating. Cheating = wrong. So you did imply people who use it are lesser artists and wrong.

Well, then I used the wrong word. Again, it's my personal opinion, and it feels like cheating to me. But then again, I don't use it in a long time, for personal preference.
And you took it like I implied it, but I didn't mean it.

Personally, I've used both methods, and I don't think using the Pen Tool is cheating ... it requires as much work as simply drawing the lines by hand, sometimes maybe even more. I don't see anything wrong with letting a program to do the work for you, simply because it could make somebody's life easier (for example if they only have a mouse and no tablet). But I have to agree that making the lineart by hand is a good practice. In the end, it's every individual person's choice.

Well, if they have a mouse and not a tablet, it's completely understandable.
But if you have a tablet, and perhaps you're also going to draw traditionally (actually pencils, brushes, etc.), I think using the pen tool wouldn't be a good idea to improve.
But, yeah, depends on the person.

I don't think people who have a tablet will actually use the Pen tool Except maybe for making some shapes that are hard to draw by hand. Or maybe they will, I dunno, I probably wouldn't do it
