Is there a name of this rock he is leaping to? If so, you should put it in your description.

Incredible shot! I was just there this last October and really enjoyed camping on the federal lands in the middle of nowhere. I cannot wait to drive back down there and spend a great deal of time exploring.

march and april IMO are bad times - march is kinda cold, but nice light - april has spring breaks - easter break - jeep safari week - way to many people for me - i've been going since 1984 and found that going in early may is just about right - most colleges have finals and commencements going on during that time. plus it's starting to get all nice and lush them - i usually spend a night or two in moab before heading south to cedar mesa west of Blanding and cedar mesa is like 7,000 ft

I really appreciate you informing me of this because I too like to have a bit more of the park to myself rather than fell rushed to get a shot to beat the crowds. When I was at Mesa Arch prior to sunrise I crested the hill just before you see the arch and there were like 20 photographers with their tripods all intertwined completely from one side of the arch to the other leaving no room for anyone else. So I climbed up and got a different angle and sat with my coffee enjoying the view.

eDDie-TK In reply to digitalHD [2013-01-24 10:59:01 +0000 UTC]

yeah mesa arch can be a zoo - same thing with delicate arch at sunset - i've see the Park Service post a ranger at Delicate - to control hostilities between photogs wanting to capture the glow and tourist who want to get their pics taken under the arch...
have you ever looked at TPE = the photographers ephemeris ??? great tool to use - check it out (google it in)
it uses google earth and shows you the direction of sunrise, the path of the sun throughout the day and sunset - same with the moon.
sooner or later you need to check out the cedar mesa area - incredible stuff there - lots of ruins and canyons, but before you go check the regulations out for that area ? the past couple of years the BLM has tightened restrictions - it's one place that is "not" dog friendly.....that's if you have a dog.
if you backpack (?) there is a awesome area called Grand Gulch Primitive Area.

digitalHD In reply to eDDie-TK [2013-01-24 14:57:08 +0000 UTC]

It was a zoo that morning for me but the day before in late morning it was empty. I thin kit best to get there during mid week in the morning. I just googled and pull that app up for my Android, awesome!! Thank you! I have a 4x4 but am also wanting to do some backpack in camping to get to some really remote sites. I very much want to visit some ruins sites. I swear this entire west is like a candy store. So many places I know of and so many more I don't know of that I want to get too!Oh,I don't bring a dog with me either but I'm thinking it might be a good idea to pack a pistol for Bear and mountain lions.

eDDie-TK In reply to digitalHD [2013-01-25 00:41:22 +0000 UTC]

yeah it's def a candy store - i moved here from Boston in 1979 - road trips all the time. i lived in casper, wyoming from 1979 thru 2005 - i'm in Colorado now - me i never worry about bears (2 close calls) and mtn lions (2 close calls) i never carry a gun - to much weight - i guess if it's my time - it's my time
and if a big cat is gonna get you it will be from behind - they go right for the neck - quick kill - you prob won't even see it coming i never here of cat attacks - only in Calf. (?)- bear will be different - most likely you'll come upon one a dead animal or surprise a sow with cubs, but still their main thing is to flee (?) as for mesa arch the big time is sunrise getting that sun star on the horiazon - i think nov and jan are the months - otherwise the sun rises either behind the La dsals of to the north of them - if you do a Flickr search for Mesa Arch and look at Exif data you'll find the best time of year. the latest i've been to moab was thanksgiving week-end - to me it was so so - cold - and sun went down way to early. i've been a bunch during jeep safari week - i have a buddy that 4 wheels - the last time there during jeep week was 3 years ago and my last. do so research on grand gulch primitive area it's way coool - i did it for about the first 5 years going down there - full of ruins, rock art..i think now you need a permit if you're going over night ??? the only downside is it's a long canyon - hard to do a loop - most people leave a vehicle at one end and hike out - but a nice loop is in bullet and out kane (i think 25 miles) from kane to collins in think is about 55-60 miles , but if it's a dry season there might not be any water - that's the killer. i was in it a couple of time when it was dry - not fun....but if get a wild hair and go in may you are more than welcome to hang out with us - last year there was 7 - all photgs - this year we're at 6 right now - some of out highlights for this trip will be "the yellow comet - picto near moab - honeycomb ruin in montezuma creek - around bluff will be the wolfman panel - the procession panel - cas de eco ruin and hopefully river house - on cedar mesa will be house of fire - cave towers - fallen roof and the citadel - if time allows - moonhouse - and if anyone wants to go the famous doll house we can include that, it's just along drive in about 27 miles - you can prob google these in and see what they look like ???

as far as i know see was probably playing bingo (?)
this guy is almost 40 - clearly old enough to make his on life and death decisions !
which i respect !
we each follow our owe path.....
that jump (distance) is just under 6 feet - i bet if you marked out 6 feet on the floor and did a running jump i'm sure you could make it (?)

there are many people who live by the code - live for today for tomorrow is promised to no-one

when you actually look at it - we are only here for a very short time (?) why not do the things you want to - and not get to a point in your life and say "i wish i did that"

we don't live forever and for him to die in the place he loves would be so precious to him.....

eDDie-TK In reply to djohn9 [2011-03-16 23:44:09 +0000 UTC]

have you had the chance to get to all american man ?
sweeeeet hike - if not go !
IMO it's the best pictograph in the four corners area (?)
there was a time when you could drive to within 1.5 miles of this, but in 1995 the park service closed the road down.
now it's like a 12 hour hike (round-trip) if you don't want to get a park permit and spend the night down there - in salt wash
alot of other glyphs and ruin - my ole lady didn't want to camp - so we did the death march - well worth it.
i plan on doing it again - maybe 2012 (?) on the last trip i think we started hiking at around 4 am - next time i'm gonna start at around mid-night (?) and spend more of the day down there.

another good read is a bunch of shorts is "down the river - ed abbey

djohn9 In reply to eDDie-TK [2011-03-17 14:43:25 +0000 UTC]

I'm hoping to get a backcountry permit and hike down Salt Creek to it. Spend at least two days, maybe three. I've hiked quite a ways up salt creek and that is nothing I want to drive in. If it's pasable and you have the right vehicle I think you can get the gate key at the ranger station. In about 2005 I hiked in with no vehicle tracks in sight but on the way out followed the tracks of a tow truck towing someone back to the gate. Another time I ran in to a Hummer from a Moab tour group at Paul Bunyons potty. My map shows a couple of arches down in that area also. I'll never tire of the place so when 2012 comes around we'll see what your plans are.

eDDie-TK In reply to djohn9 [2011-03-17 23:27:03 +0000 UTC]

what i was told the road up to the lower jump - just shy (about 1.5 miles) of all american man was closed ????
i heard about agate but didn't know you could get a key ?
yeah there's a few arches - angel arch is there and lots or ruins
it's easier coming in from above - the trailhead near cathedral butte - you can get to it in a car and camp there - it's blm land.
it's the road by the ranch on the road to needles - gravel - great shape (?) takes you into beef basin.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

djohn9 In reply to eDDie-TK [2011-03-18 14:14:35 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the tips. I'm always leary of the dotted line roads on the map. I know where the turn is you're talking about so if you think it'spassable byto a Ford Escape I'll have to give it a try. Still want to do the long hike in though. Have you got your jumps mixed up? The lower jump is up north from the visitor center heading toward the Colorado. The upper is about 8-9 miles up Salt Creek from the cave spring area.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eDDie-TK In reply to djohn9 [2011-03-19 00:10:12 +0000 UTC]

must be the upper jump - near camp site 3 ?
and yeah the road when we drove it was graded real nice - my friend drove his subaru race car up there.
the kirk cabin is amazing ? thta's the half way point (?)
the work he put into bldg it is impressive - including the work he did on just the corral ?
i'll be glad to go a again in may - june would be better - i'd like to go to the lance site for the solstice - it's a major astronomical site just a few miles west of shirt tail corners / blanding.
