Description
I have returned with some new doodles! Here's Vigil in a stylish hat. While writing for a future chapter, I had to confront the fact that Virgil's afro has a little too much flare for someone trying to keep a low profile. For a long time I battled the idea of him wearing a hat or getting a haircut (absolute No-No!) but I figured it'd break suspension of disbelief if no one recognized the guy running around with that hair. So I gave him a hat for the portion of the story in which he needs it.What's the verdict, friends?

Yeah, an afro definitely stands out among a crowd, and when you add in those distinct eyebrows and scars, Virgil is a pretty recognizable fellow. But no, no, no! No hair-cut, please. Then Ed would have no one to fight with over who wears the big-hero-hair better. XD I like the idea of a hat, and for a standard go-to I think this works, if just because it hides the height and breadth of his fro and is simple enough to suggest he's homeless (and make it easier on the artist to draw all the time!). You can always switch the head-wear up depending on the chapter or story arc, but this works for every time he goes out among the general public.
Great drawings, by the way! I love the soft shading, and the fact you took the time to detail out his collar in some "doodles". That attention to detail is amazing!!

I'll kill him off before I give him a haircut, si no need to worry. The afro stays forever! This hat was a quick sample of how his hair would behave under pressure. I'm probably gonna go with your advise. I really like the idea of him switching it up. It's relatively rare for main characters to change up their wardrobe and it'll keep things fresh for both me and the reader. Thanks again! I'm happy to hear people are enjoying these!

That's certainly good to hear. Er, well, not that I wanna see you kill off your main man, but then again, I do love an epic hero's death. But yeah, I think Virgil would have a bit of an identity crisis without the fro. I also think it's an excellent idea you're willing to change-up his look every now and again. Because you're right, very rare do you see characters wear different things, and sometimes the audience starts to wonder how many times a day they do laundry. XD
Anyway, you're welcome! I'm always looking forward to seeing your character studies and reference sheets. They help bring such a sense of life and realism to your OCs, plus your art is amazing!

Seriously, people wake up in their costumes all the time and you almost never see them get cleaned. If anything, they trade it for a new one and just throw out the musty old one. I'll remember to put at least 3 laundry chapters in Paradox just to really drive home the message.
Thank You, boss! I appreciate it! I look forward to bring more refs and studies too. Posting them helps me keep track of what I'm getting better at and what I want to improve on.

Oh yay ! ! ^0^ wow i have been off for awhile you've been putting stuff up since my absence ! Awesome ! And when i saw this I honestly thought it was a different character or something it did take me awhile just by looking to figure out it's virgil ! And yes that is a great disguise for a the future I'm kinda thinking he needs like a scarf maybe but thats just me ^0^

Yeah man! I'm back in action with a new phone! I kinda made slight changes to how I draw faces but yup, it's the one and only Virgil. It's a little bit good that you mistook him for someone else cause that means the disguise is working! And bandana over the face was one of the disguises I used while brainstorming. I might post the sketches.

i think something like a scarf or maybe a bucket hat. i'm thinking of afro samurai and a scene in particular where he wore a basket over his head. i think something sorta like that to where it does conceal his hair and covers his eyes. the scarf could act in the same fashion except he'd probably look like a mummy or a guy with a turban.
anyways, real nice character designs overall. i really like how your plotting things out both mental and physically for the story

Bucket hat sounds pretty cool but that might be even more flashy than an afro. Believe it or not, I actually had him wear a type of headscarf called a Keffiyeh for a while! I liked the look of it and it was cool cause he could draw the loose part of the scarf over his mouth and look like a badass ninja. I scrapped it long ago because I was bad at drawing them, but I actually might bring it back since you reminded me.
Decisions, decisions....

yea, it could stand out some. just depends on how you style it i suppose. the setting and time of day, etc. but yea, go for something that fits but doesn't make too bold of a statement. the throwback keffiyeh could work well in this case then.

I'll keep testing out some more hats. It's pretty fun and I'm getting good practice at drawing my man's head consistently.

Yeah, that makes alot of sense, i had the same issue with clover and her segments of the story cause white hair doesn't exactly translate as normal or subtle.
So it makes sense to make a device just for the purpose of making the scene believable. I sometimes change characters hairstyles and clothes just because its kinda hard to believe they keep the same style all the time...i mean kevin can't wear a button up every specially since they always get wrecked some way.

Right!? I mean, we design the characters to look unique and appealing but try to make them fit in a world where that sort of works against their best interests. I instantly like a comic/cartoon more when I see the artists put effort into giving the characters different outfits, like a real person, or changes to their costume. Yet, paradoxically, it makes their "official" outfit more special so I want to see more of it!

I actually like him without a hat better but if he is trying to blend in then it is probably necessary. Maybe a different hat? This hat just isn't showing his kick-ass attitude. Which he is probably trying to hide but I still think it needs to show through a little.

I'm not a fan of hatted Virgil, either. Its like caging a beast that wantss to roam free. I've drawn him in other hats to decide and two of my older uploads show him wearing snapbacks but I need a hat that keeps his head shape, has some authentic style in it, and fits the homeless attire of arab cities. I'll work on it.
Thanks for the feedback!

And the hat better fits the neo-african/Arabic aesthetic of the series.

Beanie is too round. It doesn't work well with thick African hair. His head will look like an hourglass

Joseph wears a beenie every day with an Afro and no hourglass shape. But still, it's good to see you're working on the story

From what I remember, Joseph's hair is a bit softer than african-african hair. I might be wrong but his looked a bit more like curly locks. I'm still gonna keep working on it though. And thanks, it's coming along pretty good. I might actually restart chapter 1, finally.
