Description
I wanted to do some practice in drawing diverse emotions as well as keeping consistent facial features. I made some mistakes that will eat at my soul, but I'm happy with it over all.Big piece of art coming soon!

Sweet expressions man, these are really well done! Making diverse faces is tough but you've totally pulled it off! I'm also jealous of how you've managed to keep Virgil's facial structure pretty consistent throughout all of them. That's a rad skill. Β An artist can never do too many expressions studies, I find they're a great way to hone skills and get to know your characters better.Β
I think the contained panic might be my favorite, such a great expression! XDΒ

OH MAN! What a compliment! I try my best to keep my characters from blurring into victims of "same-face syndrome", which is why I do these to remind myself of their core/unique features. Its a ton of fun, really!
I really appreciate the comment!

Wow, these are great! I love these! The array of expressions is really awesome as I struggle with expressions outside of arrogant and angry. The various angles of the head are really well done too to help with the body language like in unimpressed and severe annoyance, really cool! Feigned interest made me laugh out loud XD Keep up the awesome work, you got me inspired to try some now

Thank you so very much! I think I originally got myself pumped to do this when I saw your Cry of the Bull face sheets, so I'm joyed to hear the motivation is circling back to you

I love seeing people do these, it gives you a better visual of the character in different circumstances. Plus, it's great watching artists test themselves, because expressions are difficult and I feel like a lot of people don't give them as much attention and practice as they should. So cheers, man! Nice seeing you go for it!
Mistakes that eat away at the soul? Damn, do I know those... You did a great job, though! I particularly like the "unimpressed" face (its rather handsome, albeit unimpressed XD) and the "regret" (that emotion can be subtle and tricky, but you really got it).

This was actually super hard for me! I'm so glad to hear that the emotions came through.
I'll be doing more with other characters, since I'm now even more motivated to take on the challenge. MANY THANKS!

Well, you certainly managed to pull off some diverse and great looks. It pays off to challenge yourself, huh? I know I need to practice more light-hearted and comical expressions; I tend to fall back on angry or hurt moments. Although really, I don't play around with expressions too much because I can't seem to do just the basic face of a character consistently. Ugh. You have that down too; Virgil here always looks like Virgil!
I'm glad to help keep you motivated. Now get thee to drawing!

Oh, god... I too suffer from angry-face syndrome. At least 80% of my sketches are people who look like they want to hurt me. Don't be too hard on yourself! Its the progress and comments like these that make you feel successful.
Not to worry. I've got more of the V-man coming soon....

HaintSoul In reply to EDLima3 [2015-11-02 03:21:11 +0000 UTC]
Thank goodness I don't suffer alone. XD I mean, I guess it's a reflection of the stories I create, since I tend to lean more towards angst and action, so the characters will have angry-face syndrome when I draw them. A friend told me I should write more comedy, but damn, it's hard. Might be easier to draw something funny... ButΒ that is very true. It's not always about the destination but the journey. Should be every artist's motto. Β
And I am so ready for more V-man. Been missing that boy.

Writing comedy is one of the most depressing moments in an artists life. You can know how to be funny in real life and you can know how to be funny online but man is it hard to be funny on paper.Β That motto is perfect. I hear it a lot in anything motivational where there is the chance to fall flat on your face, so it still fits quite well with the artists life.
(God willing) it will be worth the wait!

My old beta-reader said the exact same thing. She preferred writing comedy, and she did it well, but she admitted it wasn't as easy as movies and media make it seem. Like most genres, there's an art to getting funny right, and even then I guess it depends on the style (slapstick, crude, dark satire, etc.). Well, I don't even enjoy comedies, so therein lies my problem: not enough experience. You're right, though, it's depressing to try. XD
Totally worth it!Β Β
