Hi Lorna, I actually have a store on Etsy where I sell both patterns (for more advanced beaders who already know the techniques) and instructions (for folks who prefer a step-by-step layout of projects). I can add the Blue Fire project as an instruction file to download if you like, but it will take me a few weeks. I am on vacation right now and will only get back in town after the 26th, then I need a few days to get the instructions together. Please take a look at the store and let me know if the timing is okay for you and I'll add the download.

Brilliant tutorial. I'm quite a big fan of bead jewelry, and I've wanted to make my own for a very very long time. This has been very helpful and I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Thanks for telling me I only saw the ones you had linked here, I didn't think you might have others The netting tutorial is especially helpful, I have several bead necklaces from my Mom which in turn has them from some aunts and uncles, and I've been trying for awhile to figure out how they're made.

Ellygator In reply to pitikana [2007-11-02 14:48:20 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad they're useful, and netting is fun - it's a faster technique than Peyote...

This is SO going to help me... The one time I tried Peyote, I tried plain stripes, but I screwed it up so bad that I got unpredictable zig-zags...

I'm glad you're not giving up. You have a very sure hand at beadmaking, and I'm convinced you will get onto Peyote in no time whatsoever!

Thanks for posting how you make your bead work. I think everyone can appreciate all of the time and effort that goes into a single one of your pieces

Thank you very much! It felt so odd going outside every now and then to take pictures of an unfinished piece, but I'd be very glad if it was helpful for folks.

Shuibhne [2006-12-05 23:51:07 +0000 UTC]

Elly...what kind of string do you use for your peyote beading? I'm so paranoid of it breaking somewhere, and everything coming apart in my hands

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ellygator In reply to Shuibhne [2006-12-13 10:28:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, I use two types: for my delicate wing-bracelets I use invisible yarn or nylon thread, that you can pick up in sewing supply stores. It will rip if you really, really yank on it, but I have had few pieces come apart over many years and it seems to be a good trade-off between stability and delicateness.

For pieces that need a bit more resistance like strung projects I use a thin variety of a fishing line called "Fireline". It is neutral grey and does not show. You could use it for stitching Delica beads, too, but I think for 15 seed beads it would be a bit too thick to fit through the small holes more than once or twice. However, you could dangle a 20 pound salmon off a bracelet stitched with it and it would hold. LOL!

I know I'm a bit unusual, as most beaders I've worked with use beading silk (available at bead stores), which I find a pain in the ass: it frays unless you keep waxing it, you can inadvertedly stitch through it and mess things up, and you have to always color coordinate because it shows. (It is a bit more stable than the invisible yarn, I have to admit.)

Hope this helps a little.

For example, In the starting picture I see a clowns face with it's hair on fire. Crazy, maybe, but I love how it changed into another view at the end. You are a great asset to DA!
