IMPORTANT UPDATEYou CAN NOT use white AT ALL. Make sure its SLIGHTLY a shade lighter than white or else when you go to make the background transparent everything white will also go transparent. Sorry guys!

Actually, if they want to have white on the design, they just have to change the background to a color that isn't anywhere else in the picture. For example: The background on my avvie was RED before I made it transparent. 
But thank you for that link~! I've been trying to make transparent backgrounds for FOREVER, and that iaza website is EXACTLY what I needed.

you should tell them to make the background a color that is not used in the character, so it doesn't make the while of the character transparent

It's probably because most of your character is white. If you try making it transparent now, your character will be transparent too. If I can suggest, change the background to a color you haven't used yet, like RED or something.
