Description More Tron jacket images, with flash. Levels played with here to bring up the midtones from the shadows, but NO other photomanipulation here. The white bands are highly reflective, not electronic; the flash of a camera alone produces these effects. The identity disc on the back is held on by rare-earth magnets, and can be removed at will.

To be worn at upcoming Tron-themed events.

What shape were the magnets and how did you use them?

God that is amazing! You have to tell me how you came up with a disk on your back. I can assume the design of the Jacket well enough, I think, but I must now how you did that epic disk!

It's just the basic, frisbee-style disc sold at retail... [link]

I hot-glued magnets to the underside of it, which attach to a metal ring sewn to the outside of the jacket. If I were to do it again, I probably would've used velcro - it'd hold more securely, and would be much less prone to coming off.

I see. I wonder if I'd be able to put the reflective tape on the disk as well to make the same effect as how it looks on the jacket. *strokes chin* Thank you for your awesome insite. Also, I have to ask this, are you wearing a green lantern shirt under that jacket?

I always wanted to make something like this, but getting those glow wires or led-strips is practically impossible here >.<

I made this myself... not for sale, I'm afraid. But with a little practice, it's not hard to make yourself, or even come up with a reasonable copy with iron-on reflective tape, a store-bought jacket, and a little creativity!

EmeraldBeacon In reply to Divine-The-Cheetah [2011-01-30 03:19:53 +0000 UTC]

Not that expensive at all. It's iron-on reflective tape you can get at most fabric stores and some craft stores. The kinds I got were about $2.50 for a six-foot roll, regular price (I used coupons or waited for sales, usually). I'd say the jacket took about 3 packages, total.

Which is lighter than the deluxe version, so it's easier to wear on your back.... hmm. But the real challenge is finding a way to do that with the deluxe one... *thinking*

EmeraldBeacon In reply to DexAntares [2011-01-11 05:57:52 +0000 UTC]

I want to get some heat-reactive plastic, and sort of 'mold' it to the interior of the disc... that way, you'd get something a lot more form-fitting. Then, instead of going magnet-to-metal, you can secure the magnets in each side, pole-to-pole. That grip would be a WHOLE lot stronger. Then, it's just a matter of mounting your new plastic piece to whatever costume you're working on.

Just make sure it's either high or low enough for you to reach, though. Otherwise, you might be flailing to reach your disc while your opponent already has Instant Derez heading your way...

...Where do you find those reflective white bands?... Are they better than, dunno, glow in the dark bands or electronic as you said?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EmeraldBeacon In reply to ElenaTria [2011-01-07 18:56:26 +0000 UTC]

I've found them at craft and fabric stores... head to the notions aisle, and look for the small rolls; it irons on easily. There are benefits and drawbacks to this method, of course.

ELECTRONICS will appear illuminated to the naked eye at all times, and will produce consistent effects in person and in photos and video. However, you have to consider power sources for these, and some electronic types (such as electro-luminescent or 'EL' wire or tape) need some specialized - and not cheap - equipment.

GLOW-IN-THE-DARK materials don't require any power to work, and will shine brightly under any UV light source (such as a blacklight). They will glow on their own upon leaving a brightly lit area and entering a dark one, but this effect won't last too long. In most conditions where you want the effect to show, it will either be too bright (daytime) to see the effect, or too dark (night, indoors) to build an effective charge.

This is not to be confused with the kind of illumination found in glow-sticks, which is a one-time chemical reaction that is not suitable for costume purposes beyond an hour or two.

The REFLECTIVE materials I'm using in this project require no power, and iron on fairly easily. To the naked eye, they look like silver patches on a dark costume. Interesting, futuristic, but ultimately not very interesting. When directly illuminated (such as from a camera flash), they shine VERY brightly. I prefer this method for simpler applications like this, because it is, entirely, a passive application: no power or preparation is required to create the effect.

Do you have a pattern to work from, or did you make it up as you went along?
If so, could you synthesize your methods so that I could take a stab at it?
It's a beautiful piece, by the way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EmeraldBeacon In reply to The-High-End-Of-Low [2010-12-28 04:33:07 +0000 UTC]

I don't recall the actual pattern number, but it was a very basic Jacket pattern (from McCall's, if I remember correctly). The rest of it was all modification to the design, and sewing. The gray panels on the shoulders, sides, and arms were modifications to the original solid color, along with (of course) the reflective tape.

I don't know if I could really re-create the method for this jacket, but overall, it's pretty simple as long as you know how to do some basic sewing. I suppose my dyslexia actually comes in handy here, what with the spatial-awareness bit...

The-High-End-Of-Low In reply to EmeraldBeacon [2010-12-28 04:35:47 +0000 UTC]

What's the material you used?
And how easily do you think it would be to turn it into a trench coat?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EmeraldBeacon In reply to The-High-End-Of-Low [2010-12-28 04:47:56 +0000 UTC]

I used a 'bottomweight' material that has a little more stiffness to it, but I suppose you could use just about anything you wanted. As for a trenchcoat, I don't see why it couldn't become one, though you'd probably want to start with a more suitable pattern for a trench or robe.

Really, the part that makes this shine is the tape, and that's really simple. I've found it at fabric and craft stores, it averages out at a bit over two feet for about a dollar (possibly a lot less, if you find and use coupons well), and once you get used to how it handles, it's pretty easy to install.

Looks pretty good! I'd recommend getting a shot with a flash, but in regular lighting, so you can see the jacket too... or maybe a before-and-after, with and without flash, to show how it looks in regular light.

At Disneyland, actually, though they SHOULD be available at retail. It's very functional as a frisbee (though I doubt I'd use it as one anymore, since the glue holding the magnets on isn't as tough as I'd like).

Skelefish [2010-12-19 07:41:22 +0000 UTC]

Does it just reflect a particular wavelength of light? glow in the dark? If its just reflective tape how'd you get the different colors in the pictures.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EmeraldBeacon In reply to Skelefish [2010-12-19 08:55:22 +0000 UTC]

As far as I see, it reflects almost any wavelength of light back towards its source. In a room with a lot of ambient light, it doesn't show really well; a camera flash, or other significant form light coming directly from the direction of the viewer, creates the effect here. There's no glow-in-the-dark capabilities here.

As for different colors in this picture, I'm not sure what you're referring to. The jacket is made of normal black and gray fabric, with the reflective tape ironed onto the surface; only the tape reflects.

Skelefish In reply to EmeraldBeacon [2010-12-20 05:14:23 +0000 UTC]

the colors I mean were in question to the effect of thye flash. you have 2 sets of pictures--those glowy andthose passive. i wondered if on was in a lit room and the other dark or one with flash/one without, etc?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EmeraldBeacon In reply to Skelefish [2010-12-20 09:34:29 +0000 UTC]

In general, ambient lighting, the reflective tape just looks silvery-gray. Only with direct light coming from the direction of the viewer (such as a camera flash or a car's headlights) does it turn into the bright white you see in the other pictures. The reflective parts work in both bright and dark rooms, as long as there's some direct light (obviously, it shows better in the dark, because there's not only more contrast, but cameras are more likely to have their automatic flash trigger).

EmeraldBeacon In reply to Metallikato [2010-11-11 03:18:53 +0000 UTC]

To me? Pretty dull... But what you see now is what the car sees. The iron-on tape reflects light back to the source, so only direct illumination (like a camera flash, or a car's headlights) is readily visible.
