Description
Dec 16: GUYS, THIS IS ONE CRAP-OLD TUTORIALPart 2 [link]
This tutorial is compatible for people who work with Photoshop and GIMP, and PaintTool SAI.
It was encouraged by a few people that I actually work on this, so I finished it. I may as well have got this completed before I got serious with B-S.
Corrections Since Submission:
When I mean't ugly blurred shading, I mean just throwing on a dark colour, smudging it, and having little thought about using the shadow the follow the objects shape. I should clear up on that.
-------------------------
Let me tell you, this probably isn't much different to how 45,347 other artists colour digitally, so if you were expecting something amazingly different, you're probably proven wrong. This is just how I do it, for those who where curious.
But lets hope it does those who are unsure some justice

Very nice! I've always wanted to know your shading secrets. XD As soon as I get my light sources straightened out... But srsly. This is great. You've got some interesting bits here (and in pt. 2) that I've never tried before, so thanks!

You know from making this I was worrying that someone will just go out and say "UHMMM. URR.. DURR. I ALREADY KNOW ALL THIS STUFF, WHY ARE YOU TELLING THIS? D8". I seriously was thinking that, because a lot of the stuff I know have been covered in a couple other tutorials, but it's really refreshing to hear an already confident digital colourist has something to say about it, so thank you! I am happy to hear it was of use to you!

Really? There's some stuff I haven't seen before, and I've seen quite a few tutorials.... Hmm. Ah well. And it's totally not a problem. Like, at all. It's always fun to try new stuff!

I found this tutorial so helpful because I really would like to emulate the way you highlight and shade. I always find my ways way too simple and I'm totally down for moving up in my techniques.
I think I may just use darkest blue or darkest purple instead of just black since I think black just makes the shades look more dull and lifeless which I noticed. I also really want to use the filters more often because I never do really until I did your Vaika picture. I love this tutorial so much and your second one you didn't post! I can't wait for more!

It was fantastic to see someone use it for myself! You were the first I saw use it which is so awesome because I didn't think I'd get a reaction so quick!
That's exactly right! The black would put too much grey in it, and whenever I compared it I always got a more satisfying look with the blue and purple. Aah and the filters are fantastic, but they don't have much choice in SAI so I either have to be lucky with whatever settings I have now, or saved the file as a .PSD and that I am too lazy to do xD

Well be glad you did cause I loved using it. P:
Yeah I agree, I started using darkest blue/purple and it looks freaking awesome when you use the filters. Such a rich tone of color on the shades and it gives it life. This really helped improve my work in the shading area.
You can transfer your drawings from Sai to Photoshop right? cause you can save in PSD.

The filters, are you talking about the way you change the layers or the actual filter settings in the Menu? Because I normally go with just the layer settings because the program I use isn't so sophisticated.
Yes I sure can! If there is anything you'd like me to save, I'll see if I have the file still
I tend to "recycle" my filenames and just replace an old artwork with my new one

It's really useful. I learnt a lot about shading from just proof reading it. I've never seen you blur 2 shades together. I think you do that after I leave or something or at night.

Yeah, well, you have all the time in the world to watch me shading, I think! Anyway, I am happy you've learned something from it

thank you for this You're right, the blur tool on Photoshop sucks.. So I just use the Gaussian Blur
But I'll try the smudge tool and see how that turns out

Yes, I know my friend ~tasertail uses it all the time when she does her digital works, so I can understand, it's a handy tool
Yeah, I think smudge wont do so well either! I don't use Photoshop anymore, just because the tools are just so awkward! But try whatever works for you (:

LOl well I used to use PS CS2 a bit ago, and now I got it again because I hate learning new programs XD But I guess what I'm using is probably the best way to shade on it

Ah, seriously, the day I gived up on Photoshop and went with PaintTool, the day I felt it so much better using that xD It's so much easier, and if Photoshop eats up the memory like the Cookie Monster, SAI is so much better because it doesn't slow the computer down so much But still, there aren't all the photo editing features you can hope for that Photoshop has.
On the way!
