Description
So, here we go! My way of making darker coats, the easier way! It works for me, and I think the results are pretty good for doing it the easy way!
I'm definitely not saying this is THE way to go! It is the shortcut, since you're skipping all the other colours that go with the darker coats, especially if it has blue undertones! Those have purples and burgundies and so on, and they are far more complicated!
So, I hope it works for some of you, if you feel like trying it!
Btw, I used my graphics tablet and Photoshop CS4 Extended!
Thanks for reading!

I wouldn't think so, but I'm just curious.

Hehe no, since she has red/orange undertones, I just use her normal base coat and shade it like that!

What a great idea! I never would have thought of starting with a completely different color. Usually I just tweak grayscale shading when painting a dark horse. I'll definitely have to try this.

Hehe I never thought of it either at first! I only came up with it when I noticed I got funny reds and greens when I smudged, especially on the mane! So I tried this, and it got rid of the funny colours!

If I ever get Photoshop and a tablet, I'll definitely be using this. A lot of my horses are all dark, or mostly dark, and I'd love to be able to color them!

Lol I never thought of that! Isn't hue/sat awesome? This is great for those that can't figure out how to shade dark horses on their own. I think the blue undertones looks great for fantasy/dark blue horses.

Equinus In reply to Ashzoi [2009-11-19 15:36:56 +0000 UTC]
Hehe I love hue/sat! Especially when you're doing someone else's character and you wanna tweak the colours just a smidge, but its a mission after you've shaded! I love horses with blue undertones, and drawing them is easier! lol

Oh this is so very useful! Thank you so much. I never knew how to shade black horses... without this is would've been so hard. Now it's not... and I want CS4! *jealous* And where do you find an airbrush? I love the way the shading looks so soft!

A very interesting way of doing dark horses, it never occurred to me to do it that way. I myself start with a grey shade and add darker browns/blues etc. Sometime's even a touch of purple & green. It usually comes out not too dreadful I may have to try this technique sometime though, looks fun
