i use the pen tool for cutting, which gives a really clean-cut effect.

that's alright, the pen tool is a tricky tool that takes a lot of getting used to! i suggest experimenting with it alot, eventually you'll get the hang of it. this tutorial might help you with the basics of it, though: [link]
