I use CS2.
But... almost every PS has the Smudge tool. Right click on the blur/sharp/smudge tool

Beautiful. Actually, I looked at your other two guides, and I know of a way to do smooth lineart with a mouse in a different way. [link]
If I were you, I'd link that somewhere. I can't wait for a tablet, but until then the Pen Tool is... unimaginably helpful.

SpaceTurtleStudios In reply to ??? [2005-10-02 15:03:11 +0000 UTC]

Ugh. Another tutorial advocating abuse of the smudge tool. -_-*

It's all right, I guess, but there are much better ways of representing stylized fur. This...just strikes me as a really lazy technique, much like using dodge/burn to shade something. Also, fur is never that shiny, unless the wolf used like glossy hair gel or something.

Not to insult you; the technique works fine for what it is. But there are other techniques out there that don't scream "PHOTOSHOPPED!" quite as loudly. :/

Funshade In reply to SpaceTurtleStudios [2005-10-02 15:35:26 +0000 UTC]

Well Duh there are other Techniques that arnt part of photo shop but its the smudge tool it can be uses easly and effectively! Its not a Lazy Tehc. but an Effective one! i use burn, doge, and smuge all the time. When great art is made its art and is shown to the world. now it doesnt matter if the guy took a bucket of paint and glooped it onto a canves its still art. (Example is that one painting that a guy took a paint brush and flicked paint onto a canvus and is now being fetured in art musesms.)

Just becues you type it as Great art doesnt have to be Hard to make but come from the personality that makes the picture. The lowest man can practice over and over but never make a good peice of art becaues hes not creative.

SpaceTurtleStudios In reply to Funshade [2005-10-02 22:20:38 +0000 UTC]

I didn't say it was bad art; it looks fine for what it is. All I was saying is that using tools like the burn/dodge/smudge is generally regarded as being a bit amateurish, because they're quick and easy but don't really look anything like actual light, shadows, or texture.

It's just like the Photoshop filters. A lot of beginning digital artists use them, but that doesn't make their art look any less fake/photoshopped. Your picture will be better rendered if you do the effects yourself, instead of relying on cheap, glaringly obvious filters or tools.

etuix In reply to Funshade [2005-10-02 16:00:44 +0000 UTC]

it seems to be easy, but all my pictures take quite some time O_O;; Usually I do it more complicated, but this is the 'easy' way

And since I am Dutch I use 'simple' English xD People usually understand my Tutorials, and most of the people who watch me are quite young and like this

yeah that weird guy that threw paint at his canvas and now is known as the 'wonderful artist xD'' haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

etuix In reply to SpaceTurtleStudios [2005-10-02 15:05:07 +0000 UTC]

I know fur isn't that shiney, I harldy use it myself, but people asked me how I got it like that

People do seem to love this technique though, I use it myself, but I know that there are many other rechniques aswell for fur.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SpaceTurtleStudios In reply to etuix [2005-10-02 22:23:31 +0000 UTC]

That's fine. ^^

I'm just honestly sick of seeing all these tutorials on how to paint fur that involve nothing more than using the smudge tool to mush color around. -_-* It's irritating that nobody seems to ever try and show those other, slightly more difficult tecnhiques but instead just blindly follow the typical amateur trends like sheep.

It almost makes me want do do a tutorial myself just to fight the endless stream. o_0
