I love this painting tut more then any other I've seen so far (and I've seen a lot, trying to learn this skill) because you actually show how crappy it does look before the next stage, and how much smudge really plays a role in changing that. The other tuts I've seen always seem to go from one very nicely drawn out shade to the next, looking abit odd in colour, but never in design (i.e. odd strokes that don't seem to belong) so when I, as a newbie in airbushing, try to do it, I'm always wondering why my strokes are all looking like crap, and tend to not bother finishing due to fustration, and go do something I'm good at instead. So, thanks for a great tut, which shows in-between steps that others seem not to have.

Actually, your fur looks like plastic (esp. on the front legs). You should find a fur tutorial somewhere .
But seriously, the dodge tool ruins the fur effect a lot in your method. Also I would recommend using some textured/scattered brushes for the smudging.
Apart from that I'm not sure if your highlighting/shading corresponds with the light source, you should look into that (why is his belly so bright? It looks like a third leg!). Also personally, despite that I like bold outlines, the black lines on the fur here somehow stand out too much.

In order to not turn you down so much with all this critique I must say that the animal in your journal looks way better than this one and his fur is ok. In comparison this tutorial looks rushed and lazy...

This tutorial just shows how you can do it. I didn't use a lightsource like I already said: I said just place the shading where you think it should be.

I didn't feel like explaining how to do coloured lines aswell, I know it is simple, but I made this at 2am X_X; Bear with me. And many people do seem to like it and it prolly will help them.

jakub-sudra In reply to etuix [2005-10-02 13:38:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I figured that the light source is indeed not important in this tutorial, so you've got a point there.

But I still think that making a tutorial needs some more attention, so making this at 2am isn't any excuse. Theoretically when doing a tutorial, especially one as popular as this one, you get partially responsible for a lot of pieces that will appear on DA. You're saying that the tutorial can help many people, but I wouldn't really like to see now a lot of works with fur looking like this (I am really certain that the dodge tool is evil ). I hope that they will just treat this as a base for developing further (and getting at least to your actual level of skill, which is not represented by this tut).
Probably I'm too picky commenting like this on a simple tutorial, but I think I've got some reason here.

That's excellent! Thanks, it's great! Just one question - is the colouring all done on the same layer?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

etuix In reply to lxt-angel [2005-10-02 10:28:02 +0000 UTC]

I did the fur shading on one layer yes. The other parts: ears, nose etc on different layers. You should check out my Photoshop Tutorial, then you know how i use the layers

Link is in the description of this tutorial
