I decide to post it here on my SFW account, so don't wonder why this appears here too. So what have I done here?

First:

I'm not a 40k Tabletop player or into the novels and video games (my thing is Battletech 😉) so don't purge my heretic ass.
BUT
I enjoy the lore of the very interesting and big universe.

Second:

For me as (hobby)artist I try to go a bit deeper into mechanical designs and use my knowledge to give my creations a plausible and realistic background. I love guns and shooting and over a decade, it's part of my life and one of my small businesses.

After consuming a bit more 40k lore and getting pushed by friends who really into it, I thought I would be nice to do my duty here too, so I give the famous 40k Bolter weapon a chance, display my thoughts, slap on my heretic design and tell you why the Bolter realistically sucks when you blend out how the weapon is depicted, just look in the wiki and what GW writes about the overall concept.

BECAUSE

GW's concept/invention of the weapon is contradictory crap from people that obviously don't know how guns and ballistics work. I'm not a rocket scientist or gunsmith, but I know enough to run my guns correct, know what I can do with it and "operate" the shit out of the most people.

Yeah, yeah, I know. But that's not the point. You cannot sell a donkey as a cow. That's what happen here. Let me explain.

The Bolter is a high caliber pistol, rifle or machine gun (depends on the pattern) that delivers death and destruction and break your bones if you just pathetic regular human. Wrong.

Why? Because it's not a regular gun. It's not like you fire a 20 mm machine gun one-handed. The Bolter is a kind of Gyrojet pistol or rifle that fires mini rockets. The recoil of a Gyrojet pistol (go search for videos) compared to regular guns in the same caliber, is non-existent. Make it bigger, didn't change the fact much. Conclusion: your grandma can shoot a bolter if the gun itself isn't too heavy.

🤬"But it's a two stage round that ignites the first charge that propelled the rocket out of the barrel and then ignites the rocket booster to prevent overpressure in the weapon and make the projectile even faster... blabla..."

Yes, but that's bs and not how ballistics work. Ignite a booster behind a projectile only makes go somewhere but not at the target, so cancel that.
In general, you can use a rifled barrel to shoot projectiles, use a smooth bore barrel for sub caliber high velocity fin stabilized projectiles or fin stabilized high explosives, shaped charges or whatever, or you shoot a rocket out of a tube. Yes, you can combine it, but only to a certain degree to be effective. All the verities of these systems working very well on its own, and every one of it does a better job than a Gyrojet Pistol or rifle.

🤬"But these rockets have a homing device and can precisely aim at targets and their explosives and high penetration and blabla..."

How much stuff do you think you can put into these 19 mm mini rocket? It must be relatively lightweight to fly as a rocket, so penetration performance is shit in general.
Yes, you can put a penetration shaped charge on the tip to make a hole first and then send an explosive charge through. But how big can you go, how many charges you can stack together? These round have a size limit.
In addition to that, they are very small. Look at the size of an Anti Tank shaped charge or bunker buster. You cannot reduce the size to 19.05 mm. And there are other problems.
Reactive armor best known for countermeasures or simple cage that forces the warhead to go of early to prevent the shaped charge to form the spike in the correct distance to the armor.

🤬"But the tips are made out of diamantium and there's a uranium core and blabla..."

That's all nice, cool and very effective, but only if you use it as a regular projectile. That's not the case.

🤬"But you can add a longer barrel to increase precision blabla..."

It's a weak Gyrojet Pistol after all. The Mini Rockets are flimsy, light, very slow compared to other projectiles and the precision is inadequate, because stabilization is achieved trough rotation due to the angled holes of the booster at the bottom of the rocket. A bullet also rotates, but with a much higher frequency and this is achieved through its shape, weight, friction and the rounds charge, burning speed of the charge, barrel shape, barrel length, muzzle shape, riffling and riffling spin, diameter, material and production method.

Just use a common system or Rocket/RPG's. It does the same, but much better.

🤬"But the psychological effect with the thunderous sound and fire and blabla..."

It's not. Compared to a regular firearm, it's very silent.

But there's not only disadvantages.
In comparison to any other firearm, a Gyrojet Pistol is very lightweight, very easy and cheap to produce, easy to maintain, easy to handle. The ammunition is the most complicated part of it. Not that bad, especially if you're dealing with tech loss.

The Bolter was intended as a high performance, high caliber, high versatile weapon, that only the best of the best can handle to unleash the emperors' breath to clean the galaxy from humanities foes. What they describe in the Wiki is a contractionary conception of weapon that's not worthy in the hand of the elite of the elite. Not enough punch, not enough range, not enough precision.

Just give the space marines a scale up UMP45 or a 50 BMG or something like that, that would suit them all much better and add a plausible bad ass vibe to it.
