I started this portrait back in November, after I had seen Macklemore perform in Philly. It was an amazing experience and he is such a wonderful and inspirational man.

I titled this piece after his song on The Heist "Starting Over", which deals with his relapse:www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXwO7P…

Jeez Alana, This was a great way to return to deviantart! It's wonderful! Your color scheme is beautiful: vibrant and strong where it needs to be, cool and calm in other places! And don't get me started on use of that light gray paint material to add depth and 3d quality to this piece. it seems to represent the melting effect one may experience after a cleansing of the soul. I remember when I first heard starting over. I was at work after dealing with some problems, and even though they were not drug related, when he told the story of the woman who thanked him for helping her get clean, i shed real tears. Kind of embarrassing at work, if i do say so myself.

That being said, the treatment of the subject is unbelievable! He looks completely at piece and I love the contrast between the darks and the cools. the way you handled his pants and jacket is jaw dropping. Sigh, it's funny. I have a Macklemore concert to go to tonight, and when he sings "starting over" I'll think of this painting. I love you, and I love this piece! It is amazing.

Thank you Olivia, this means so much to me! For me, his song Otherside was the most inspirational thing I had ever heard, and it still is to this day. It was such an emotional portrait of what he's been through and I look up to him so much. So when I heard Starting Over I was in tears too : (

Oh my goodness, have such a good time! He is absolutely incredible in concert: funny animated, and oh so attractive! You're going to have a blast : )

I think "same love" is my favorite. I espeically love the woman singing at the end and the use of the bible verse.

and the concert was EPIC!!! He's awesome!!!

Same Love brought me to tears the first time I heard it. Honestly there isn't a single song of his that doesn't get my emotions going. Well, "Fake I.D." I could live without, lol.

This is really nicely done I love the contrast between the bold colours, it really makes this stand out. The way you have done the white works really well and really gives the impression of washing over him. I do think though that some of the beautiful details are lost in the bright colours. The black lines might be more bold in real life but I do think in this version they can be a little hard to see because of how bright the background is. I would perhaps suggest going over some of the lines with a thicker pen to bring out the details.

Thank you so much for this lovely comment I had so much fun with the colors this time and really tried to push them as far as I could. But I do agree that if the vibrance of the colors was a little overwhelming and that it washes out a some of the colors. I think part of that was also the photograph I took of it -- it's a little clearer in person. And I will definitely go over the outline with a thicker pen just to bring him out a little more~

Thanks again!

A seriously powerful image. I love the color palette making contrast with the outlined man, and of course the format is really interesting.

I think the same as hefeigal in the outline of his face. The details and shading of the bottom makes it look like a photo, but as we go up the realism vanishes a bit. Which is a shame

The concept of the white painting cleaning him up is great, works perfect. However, in my very own personal opinion, life doesn't stop being happy and colorful while cleaning up, I feel it must be the opposite. But, that's just my opinion.

Again, really good job, you're very talented

Thank you so much so such a lengthy comment! I really appreciate it!

I think one of the problems I had, especially in regard to the difference in shading, was that the reference photo was extremely light in the face and top of the jacket, which made it disappear a little. I'll definitely be going back into that though!

I totally see your perspective on that. I think I was just going off of the idea for a "clean slate", and so just a wave of white washing his past and giving his a new start. Plus, white is nicest to stipple on, so it was a nice bonus.

Thank you so much for your feedback!

Amazing, the realism is great, and the colors you have look really nice. The wrinkles are done perfectly as well, and the shading is lovely.

This could just be me, but I feel that if you darkened the lines just a bit on his face, arms, etc, it would stand out a bit more. Not a lot, of course, but just a touch to make his face stand out a bit more.
But other than that, I have no complaints. Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much for such a long comment! I had so much fun doing the textures in the jacket, so I'm glad you thought they came out well.

I do agree with you. I always struggle a little bit to determine how much of an outline I should give my portraits, and in most piece I tend to go with minimal outlining, but because this was done on a colored canvas I should have probably darkened it a little more. So I might go back in and tweak it a tiny bit just to make it pop a little more. Thanks again!

Macklemore has been my biggest inspiration and one of my biggest role models over the last year of my life. He's inspired me to change myself for the better, and to set an example by being a role model for others. I can honestly say that his music has changed my life for the better and given me a clear purpose. Your depiction of him in this piece is amazing. It's creative, beautiful, and inspiring.

I saw this piece in the #ProjectComment gallery. Had I seen it anywhere else I would have still fav'd it in an instant and left you feedback. Please keep up the inspiring work!
