Description Black micron pens and white gelly roll pens on acrylic canvas, about 25 hours.
Comments are always appreciated

I started this back in July after I saw New Years Day in concert at Vans Warped Tour. They've been one of my favorite bands this past year and their lead singer, Ashley Costello, is one of my role models. She's not afraid to speak up for herself and embraces her differences. Their latest album (Victim to Villain) was particularly moving to me, and goes off of this idea that victims and those who have been put down can still rise up and be strong.

I also tried to do something different with this piece from what I've been doing in the past. I've been thinking about moving into using colored micron pens in some of my pieces, but I always chicken out in the end. So transitioning to using a white gel pen was a big step for me. It was a really frustrating experience in some ways as I usually use a 005-02 size pen, and the white gel pen was about a 05-08, so it was a huge difference and I felt like I lost some of the details when I was using it. But I also really like how it came out in the end and I might try experimenting with it again.

UPDATE: Sooo Jake Jones just made this his profile picture. I think I'm having a heart attack right now.

This piece is gorgeous!Β  I love the difference the stripes create in the composition.Β  Your proportions are superb.Β  The only thing I see that might need worked on is that the shadows around the eyes are quite dark.Β  It looks like he's wearing dark eye shadow above his eyes, and in a very few places, his hair is the same.Β  The stippling effect is great, though, and you did so well that no one could guess you're not used to the white pen.Β  Great job!

Wow, thank you so much for such a long and specific comment. I did struggle with some of the contrast in the piece, and some of that had to do with the fact that the reference image was from a photo shoot and so he was wearing a lot of heavy eye makeup, but it's something that I'm trying to be more conscious of in general. Thank you so much for your critique!

Amazing, the contrast is phenomenal and the detail you've created with just dots is really amazing. Keep up the amazing work! Β

Ah thank you so much for the lovely comment! I was really worried about how much detailing I was going to lose by using the white pen, but I'm glad you liked the contrast !

Wow, this is unbelievably cool. How did you get the really dark darks and bright white dots? Did you use black paper?

Thanks girl! I actually painted the canvas before hand and used painter's tape to create the alternating stripes. And then I just used a black pen on the white surface and a white gel pen on the black. It took a while to get used to, but I think I'm going to try and do it again soon!

You put such an amazing amount of work into your pieces. I couldn't imagine how long it takes and the level of patience that you possess to be able to paint these works. I mean, I don't even know what painter's tape is. I'm learning so much. I'm definitely gonna look into white gel pens. Seems like an awesome artist tool.

All in all, it is Β wonderful piece.Β

Oh my goodness, white gel pens have totally become my addiction as of lately. They're actually really cool for any kind of detailing, I've recently seen them being used in watercolor paintings, and it's sort of blown my mind.

Thank you again
