Description A thunderstorm one night provided me with not one , but two great shots. Earlier that day it left me with what you see above.

These mammatus clouds are a sign of thermal instability within a storm, and are a sign that the storm is weakening, or that you're on the backside (where the main updraft cools rapidly and sinks, pushing the base clouds downward).

This picture is truly astounding. The timing to take such an incredible picture could not be better. It's not a boring picture either, it's like that picture perfect moment, that one time where you get a chance to take that million dollar picture, well i think it's this one. You couldn't of done any better because i think this is one of the best landscape pictures i have seen i a while. All credit goes to you and i believe if you keep up this amazing work, you will be very well known. Keep up the good work!!! And take more pictures, i would love to critique them e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

Thanks for the very kind words! Feel free to browse through my gallery, as there's a few more things like this in there (though you might have to dig for them ).

Aye, thanks! The lens I used for this isn't of the highest quality, so I'm glad to get off with what I had.

I've always wondered what those kind of clouds were... Almost looks like a fire boiling across a ceiling.

I'd recommend the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 if you're looking for an upgrade to your lens. Expensive compared to the 18-55mm, but well worth it. Mine rarely comes off of my camera.

I looked into getting one on eBay, but I'm really hoping to make enough moola to get the 10-22 EF-S or the 15mm fisheye.

Well if lighting shots like this are your goal, I'd opt for the fisheye so you get the most coverage and increase your chances of getting more lightning in your frame. And in general the distortion does some crazy things to skies like this, so I don't think you'd be disappointed. I'm looking into getting one to use for star trail shots sometime, but right now the 11-16mm is fulfilling that role wonderfully.

I need a fisheye something bad, and not just for weather applications. I really need it for some portrait work and weddings that I have coming up.

A fisheye for portraits? Hmm, unconventional for sure, but I'm interested to see how they turn out.

It's something you have to be judicious with, but yields some very interesting results when done right. They make for great use during weddings especially.

Well I look forward to seeing what you get when you get it. I have enough trouble working with my ultra-wide properly, so using a fisheye like that is way beyond me right now...
