Description
This is my wife's favorite of my ink drawings. It's one of the very few pieces of mine that have included flowers. Frankly, I don't like to draw or paint flowers. There are enough people in the world doing that. They seem to have a passion for flowers. I don't. I have a passion for beautiful, scantily-clad females and dark, corrupting evil. So, I draw them. But whaddya' know?! A picture showed up in my head with a beautiful, scantily-clad female, a dark, corrupting evil (check out the shape hidden in the tree), and some flowers! Lots of flowers! I was amazed. If you can't see the evil guy hidden in the tree-bark, comment below and I'll edit/add some pointers in here. He's not that hard to spot, I think...
Enjoy! --Faile35

Hi Jeff - I found you through Google Images - I was wondering if I could use this very evocative illustration to promote a song I've written, The Evil Tree, which depicts this precise situation - although metaphorically.
I haven't been able to locate any info that provides licensing info.

Hi! Sure you can use it. Thank you for asking. Please just add some credit somewhere in there wherever you make your music available, and please be sure to send me a link. "The Evil Tree" sounds like the kind of music I would definitely listen to while I draw... well... something like an evil tree, which I tend to do frequently. Good luck!

Thank you so very much for that. I will, most certainly, give you credit AND let you know when the song becomes available. Because of the nature of music art, I'll have to use a square "version" of the illustration but I'll try to keep the integrity of your work as much as possible.

Mmm.. my kind of picture too. Sounds like a scene I'd have in my own little grove.. little nymph unafraid of the 'evil tree' (because the nymph herself is evil ). Definately gets a thumbs up.

Thank you! Yes, not having her afraid of the obvious, looming evil was kind of a switch for me. Having her not entwined in groping limbs and twigs was an even bigger switch...

Maybe, but my wife loves this piece for its peaceful feeling, and the huge amount of "nature" that I is not normally an element in my art. So, I'll let the notion percolate and see if something shows up. It could be that I could modify my upcoming satyr image to include this fine female figure...

it's nice to know i can provide misty refreshment from time to time! And it's great to know you as well, you make me feel like less of a sick freak (haha, just pulling your leg) but seriously, about the whole nudity thing? why the hell do people find it soo offensive?
I was watching TV around haloween and they had this show about horror flicks, there was this bit about hostel, and on network TV they showed the scene where the guys achilies tendon was sliced, and then when the guy chopped off the other guys fingers...I was thinking "Let me get this straight...THIS is ok but PORN is wrong??????" what is so dirty about sex? and secondly, why does nudity have to always be directly correlated with sex? yes, nudity can be sexy, but you know what? EVERYONE has naked bodies, go to a nude beach in europe some time, you will be confronted with the fact that every one has a naked body, the beautiful the not so beautiful, tall people, short people, overweight, underweight, children parents, grandparents...once you see al these people just lying around, you probably aren't thinking about sex. the're just naked, thats all. whats the big deal?
and on the other note, how the hwll is it more damaging to a child to let them see sex than to watch exaggerated, senseless violence and gore???? Am I missing something here? well thats a long enough rant for one evening..

Nudity. I know you're not Christian, so I don't think you'll mind me suggesting that Christian beliefs are a large part of why nudity is considered "evil." However, I believe that the foundation for such a belief is also in the ideas presented in the Old Testament and in Islamic teachings as well. It all comes down to the same idea, I think, which is that a man seeing a woman's naked body is compelled to think of sex with her, which is 'wrong,' and therefore she should be covered up. Frankly, I see a lot of misleading and downright stupid ideas in this argument, some of which you pointed out in your comment above.
Try this on for size: Which is the real wrong here, the compulsion to have sex with the viewed naked woman, or actually having sex with the viewed naked woman? In the New Testament, Jesus says that "he who looketh upon a woman to lust after her hath already committed adultery in his heart," which seems to suggest that the compulsion is as bad as the deed itself. This is at the heart of the monastic ideal, really, in which any inclination toward sexual thoughts and feelings is an evil one. It is my understanding that Muslim women are to remain mostly covered in public to decrease the amount of stray "temptations" their unclothed appearance may inspire in men. Now, while I believe that a woman's naked body can have a real power over the thoughts and feelings of a man, I think that the Christian monasticism and Muslim enforced covering of a woman's body are going too far in the other direction, and thus heavily contribute to the wrongful disparaging of the naked form. Further, in my own personal experience, I've seen this idea taken even further, so that sex is even worse than nudity, rather than something that is right, acceptable, worthwhile, and--hell--even fun!
Another issue is the one-sidedness of it all. You and I have talked about this one a little bit. All this time we seem to be concerned about the souls of men, while women are regarded as pawns/tools/temptations/goods/whatnot. I have wondered many times if the reason why the female form is considered (by those I care to listen to) to be so artistically beautiful is that men are mainly the ones doing the drawing and the talking. Is there a genetic programming in men that gives them a compulsion to look at and admire the female figure while there is no corresponding genetic compulsion in women? I'm not talking about homosexuality (although I can see how the subject could enter into the discussion), but I am wondering if the relative lack of naked men in art is a function of the male-domination of society than any genetic dispositions in our race.
The worst and strongest part of it, in my opinion, you suggested. People are so eager to put blame on something they saw rather than on what they thought about it or what they did based on those thoughts. People are so eager to throw their own responsibility and blame from themselves, and the argument just doesn't hold up. Regarding nudity, it makes people despise their own body and those of others and creates an attitude of fear instead of acceptance and love. And then other things that are more offensive to me (such as the murder of innocent women and children) are watched all the time ("Murder, She Wrote," are you kidding me?!). It drives me crazy. Someday, some guy (or maybe even a woman, if the above paragraph is at all valid) is going to claim that my artwork inspired him/her to abduct some poor girl and do horrible things to her. Don't know how I'll take that, but I certainly won't take it well, I'm afraid...
Glad you don't feel like a sick freak. I totally agree with the blood-and-violence issue, although one of my favorite movies is "The Thing," which is very bloody and violent...
Now there's a rant...

Moms are like that, I guess. I wonder how wierd it would be if they weren't. "Now, Jeff, I was hoping you were going to be painting another naked woman in bondage to hang on my living room wall. What's with all of this landscape trash?!" Yeah, it would be wierd. And I'll have you know that I'm quite content leaving a subject's clothes on when the situation calls for it. But, as you'd guess, my "default" is set on "nudity"...
Got me pegged, don't you.

Hmm, not sure if I think it's your _best_ work, but I think your wife has good taste. Nice setting: trees in background, with evil tree, pool and nymph in foreground. Flowers in this case lend an amiguous element; possibly nice, pretty flowers adorning nymph pool, possibly evil, seductive flowers encroaching on nymph pool.
Nice expression on the nymph's face, and I really like the evil tree, too, especially the way you make the face in it appear as part of its trunk. Very nice work, I like!

Thanks! Some people can spot the evil guy quickly. It reminds me of the saying, "Evil knows Evil." I think that is from Dr. Smith in the movie version of "Lost in Space." Of course, I didn't intend to call you evil, but any guy who can howl so utterly werewolf-like in DA comments has got to have "something different" going on...

Wow, I really like this one. The woman is absolutely beautiful... And I wish I had looked at the picture before I read the description. I'm pretty sure I would have seen the evil face in the tree without you mentioning it, but I'm not quite sure... It's kind of surprising. I hope that woman isn't stupid enough to keep hanging around in that area if she saw how evil the tree is. By the way, the flowers look very nice, as does the water. I'm impressed by how well you draw in ink... Question: You do draw in pencil first, then go over it in ink, don't you? Because if you just go ahead and do it in ink, that's... amazing.
Anyway, I really like this piece. In fact, I'll fave it. (I do that to a lot of your art, don't I?
) Wonderful work!

Sometimes when I look at this one, I think the nymph knows the tree is there. At other times, I think the tree is more bitterly and overly protective of her than it is evil, so it poses little danger to her. At other times, I think it is evil but not harmful to her as a child of the forest. At other times, she's in big, big trouble...
To answer your question, I do sketch lightly in pencil on many of them. On some of them I'll put a dot here or there to begin, and go right into ink from there. On a few of them a pencil never touches the paper.
Thanks for the compliments and the favorite. I appreciate the praise.

Roae In reply to faile35 [2006-08-22 20:57:48 +0000 UTC]
Hm... Interesting. So, it just depends on your point of view, then. I dunno, the tree looks a little too evil to just be over-protective. But that's just me.
Wow... And the ones where you never do pencil turn out well? That IS amazing. If I couldn't erase on my drawings... they'd all turn out so horrible that I'd have to throw them away.
I do a lot of erasing, because nothing ever looks quite right the first time around. Except in sketches, which need a lot of erasing anyway. So, what did you do with this one?
You're very welcome!

On this one I think I outlined the trunk of the tree and some of the nymph--her hair, arms, and hips. I drew a pencil line across the horizon and another slightly higher on the top of the treeline, and a quarter circle in each lower corner to make sure that was going to look like I wanted. All-in-all, I probably spent 3-4 minutes in pencil or thinking with a pencil in my hand before I took to ink.
