EDIT October 9, 2008: Fixed script so it will work in GIMP 2.6 (the newest stable version.) It should also work in GIMP 2.4. If you have a previous version of this script, please delete it to avoid conflicts.Let me know if you have any problems with it.
needcoffee asked me to do a script version of his Chrome Tutorial , so I obliged! Stop by his site and tell him "Thanks" for the tutorial and allowing me to turn it into a script.
Click on the Download link to get the script for GIMP 2.4 (which is simply a text file) and save it to your GIMP scripts folder (ie....C
Add some text or some other object that has transparent space around it. Highlight the text (or object) layer and go to:
Filters > Alpha to Logo > Fencepost Chrome...
Let me know if you run into any problems with it.
Suggestions welcome.
2/19/08: Fixed the scripts so now they work MUCH better with the color function. Hopefully, your final product will look like you would expect it to. So, if you want gold, you'll get gold, not some yellowish-psychadelic-looking stuff!

Is this a problem of these Gimp Version?
Kind regards

When I try to use it it's grayed out in the menu. I know for some effects you have to have an alpha channel and for others you can't have one, but I tried that and it didn't work. What does the image have to have to be able to use this effect?

The image has to be an RGB format. It won't work on Indexed (like gifs) or grayscale images. Go to Image > Mode to convert to an RGB. Let me know if you're still having trouble with it.

I am so sorry, I am very new at this.
When I click on the download, all i get is the script in my window. I tried copying it but I can't save it anywhere. Where do I find that option?
It is such nice text, I am excited to work with it but I can't figure this out LOL Sorry! Or even if you could point me to a tutorial, my searches haven't found one yet LOL

Once again, sorry for not knowing, and also for posting almost the same question on two of your files *blush*.
I can't figure out _how_ to save the file. I mean, i click download, the file opens up in the internet window as text. I click file > save as.... then my choices are .html/.htm , .mht , .txt . I tried saving the file as those in the proper script folder, but GIMP won't read it. The other script files in the folders are .scm. It doesn't appear. I try the refresh script-fu and still... nothing. How do I save this as a .scm file?
I am embarrased to have an idea that the solution is probably very simple, but I am hitting a brick wall LOL.

Probably the easiest way to do it, is when you click on the download link, rather than letting Windows open up the file, just choose the Save option and save it to your desktop. Then, you can copy and paste the file into the GIMP/Scripts folder. You don't have to worry about adding an extension to the file that way...it's already done for you. Delete the other files you previously tried to save.
However, if that doesn't work, the way you get it to work depends on what software opens it up. Here's what you do:
Go to file > Save As and add an ".scm" extension to the end. Windows has a nasty habit of adding a "txt" extension to the end of script files when using Notepad/WordPad. In Notepad, make sure you choose "All Files" under the Save As Type dropdown (don't use Text files) and in WordPad, make sure you use "Text Document" under the Save As Type Dropdown. I know it's a pain/confusing, but that's the way it is.
Hopefully this helps. Let me know if you're still having trouble.
