This was really, really helpful. But, how do you decide what colors to use in your pallet?

Yeah it should work in SAI as well, I used SAI for a short while really long ago and it worked fine. I can't remember the brush settings etc though ><

Yeah that would probably work, but I think a normal brush would work too since they have the same settings as the ones in photoshop

Wow, this is amazing. The foal looks beautiful and the way you shade seems very.... complicated? Yeah, that's a good word. But it certainly pays off in the end. Some day I'll have to try it out. I have noticed that ever since I read you're last tutorial, my shading style has changed slightly. It definately is not anything close to yours, but I have begun to shade more by using diferent colors and opacities then with the shading tool. I just like the affect better.
It's very messy but here is a rough example of what you're tutorial has inspired: [link] (warning, sloppy sketch ahead)

I think our techniques are very similar, even if the execution differs, what's visible in the final results - and I'm working with greyscale and colour afterwards of course. Nice tutorial, I think I'd never be able to explain things that short and simple O.o My tutorials would probably be 10% pictures and 90% text
