The crew of Serenity ... they are having fun in the cargo hold.
Here you get a look at the crew of Serenity. The crew is a mixture of odd characters ... if you do not know the series follow Derrial Book as he walks around.

Derrial Book is a shepherd, this basically means that he is a preacher. Although seeming to be a devout Christian, he displays in depth knowledge of criminal activities and is proficient in hand to hand combat and weapons

The first person Book passes is Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds ... Mal is the owner and captain of Serenity. He fought in the wars as a platoon sergeant on the side of the Browncoats. He fought in the Unification wars with Zoe Washburne. He is a very contradictory character.

Sitting next to Mal is Inara Serra. Inara is a companion, which is the 26th century equivalent of a courtesan. She rents one of the two shuttles on Serenity and her high society standings lends degree of legitimacy and social acceptance to the crew. There seems to be a lot of unspoken romantic tension between her and Mal. Mal’s weapon of choice is his pistol.

Further along is Jayne Cobb the hired muscle. He is a macho character but is shown to have a particularly intense fear of Reavers, more so than the rest of the crew. Despite his amoral personality, he sends a significant portion of his income to his mother. Jayne loves big guns.

As Book descends the stairs, he meets up with Hoban "Wash" Washburne. Wash is the Pilot for Serenity and married to Zoe. Wash is jealous of the relationship Zoe shares with Mal. He is a light hearted character and makes amusing comments despite the severity of the situation. Wash is depicted here playing with his dinosaurs ... if you don't get it - watch the very first episode.

Below Wash is Zoe Alleyne Washburne. She is second in command of Serenity and has a great knowledge of combat. She fought under the leadership of Mal in the Unification wars as a corporal and shows almost unconditional loyalty to him.

The next person Book passes is Simon Tam. He is an exceptional doctor and scored into the top 3% of his class at a top core-planet institution. He is on the run with his sister River Tam (who he rescues from an alliance research institution). Both he and his sister had a privileged upbringing and access to the best education. He gave up a promising future in medicine to save his sister. Simon also develops feelings for Kaylee, but every time he makes an attempt to show his feelings he foils it by unwittingly making an inappropriate remark.

Just above Simon is Kaywinnit Lee "Kaylee" Frye. Kaylee is the ship's mechanic and shows an uncanny knowledge and love of machinery and engines. She is wholesome, sweet, and completely genuine in that sweetness", and she loves being on that ship. She loves all of those people. And she's the only one who loves all of them incredibly genuinely. She has a crush on Simon Tam.

Lastly, Book passes by River Tam. She was smuggled onto the ship by her brother. She was a child prodigy of unparalleled genius, but she was experimented on at the hands of Alliance doctors, leaving her delusional, erratic, and at times violent. Most of the crew care for her except for Jayne who fears her. She is also telepathic.

If you noticed Mal shooting those poor guys running violently at him –cease your concern for them … they are Reavers. They are the product of alliance experimentation that left them violent; the peel their flesh and push metal through the flesh that remains. They are savage, brutal and primal, and they bait ships and then rape, torture, murder, and eat their victims. They never venture into occupied space and as a result the inner alliance worlds believe them to be a myth to cover real violent criminals. They travel in macabre ships stained with blood and decorated with corpses chained to the hulls.
As Zoe said "If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skins into their clothing – and if we're very very lucky, they'll do it in that order."
