Description My two newest coyote pelts. Sparrow, the standard colored coyote was found as roadkill last fall and tanned by myself. My black coyote was obtained through a seller on taxidermy.net and was shipped to me frozen with her paws and head left in so I could skin them out myself since I'm picky.

Once that was done, I was able to take her through the tanning process and now I have two beautiful, home tanned coyote girls.

your coyotes are just the most beautiful ever, i swear! you do these animals great honor, and you create absolute masterpieces from their otherwise meaningless death!

so pretty! Do you use mink oil to shape the faces? Because I just got my new coyote and want to reshape her face to look more tike that.

These two were tanned by me so I was able to shape them as they dried. If you have a pelt that's already dry and has a messed up face, usually just soaking it in a bowl of water for an hour or so softens it enough to where you can gently shape it to what you like.

If you're going to cry and get upset, do it in the direction of the person driving the car that night. Many of the animals that appear in my gallery were found already dead, victims of cars on the road. I didn't have anything to do with EITHER of these animals' deaths so don't try to guilt trip me about it.

Instead, try to see things from a different point of view. Taxidermy is a way of showing respect and appreciation for the animal no longer living. Once they've been correctly preserved, they will be around for many, many years into the future rather than simply rotting on the ground.

The faces are so neat and clean. Do they ever get all shrunken and wrinkly?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FossilFeather In reply to FurryFoxFur [2010-12-23 17:29:49 +0000 UTC]

I tanned these two myself so I had full control over them as they were drying and intentionally shaped them this way. But even with pelts that were not tanned by me, I just take them and, after soaking their heads in water for a few hours, I can reshape and repose them into a face that's nice looking and not all wrinkled up.

Silverliger In reply to FossilFeather [2012-05-24 15:53:06 +0000 UTC]

Let me ask, when your shaping the face, do you pin it down on something so it dries the way you want it to? I recently aquired a huge black coyote and when it came to me the face was a little squished up. So, i soaked the face and used small pins to lay the face out how I wanted it. It came out perfect (similar to yours), but i wanted to see if this was the correct procedure. Thanks!

FossilFeather In reply to Silverliger [2012-11-11 21:34:09 +0000 UTC]

I don't use pins on mine but that doesn't mean that using that method is "wrong." There are lots of ways to achieve the same thing.

You're welcome. Be very careful though. The antique pelts or really dry ones are not good candidates for soaking as there is a chance they could disintegrate.

Beautiful pelts.
Actually I'm against pelts.
But as long as the animal was dead before, it's pretty fine to me.

Seeing your pelts has made me want my own.. especially after seeing these two girls :c they're so beautiful..

D: and there are so many coyotes [there were even two beavers by the river that had been hit I stopped to look at.. *-*] around here that people hit with their cars and don't bother to push off the road so people just keep running them over.. if some weren't so badly damaged - I'd try talking my mom into letting me keep them X__x I nearly kept the two coons that died on our land.. but I was too afraid of any diseases :c they were precious.. like.. not even that old.. maybe.. a year old or so?

my grandmothers cat had killed a baby bunny a few years back and given it to me as a gift.. it was perfect besides a little blood on its neck, but my grandmother made me throw it away I would have loved to of kept the little guy.. he was so soft *-* I can't imagine how soft your yote pelts must be <33

FossilFeather In reply to ShadiSin [2010-04-18 15:19:46 +0000 UTC]

Aw, well have you ever tried to buy an already tanned pelt from a taxidermist? Maybe your family would let you keep one of those since the tanning process kills any germs or parasites.

ShadiSin In reply to FossilFeather [2010-04-18 15:31:32 +0000 UTC]

Yes I have tried

they're either not what I'm looking for, or just way too expensive for me at the time

I'll get my own pelt one day, though <3

it'll just take a lot to talk my parents into it~

Ooooh, piled on top on one another over your shoulders?

It's so nice that people there can really appreciate pelts. If you came here with them, you'd get filthy looks and horrified questions.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FossilFeather In reply to Featherologist [2010-04-18 16:02:41 +0000 UTC]

Not over my shoulders but I had my left arm bent and I flopped them over the part of my arm between the elbow and the wrist and carried them around like that.

It is! I love being surrounded by people that don't freak out like that. Hunters have been put into such an awful light these days and while it's true that poachers should be done away with, regulated hunting is important to the health of some species. Namely deer, where we have foolishly obliterated their natural predators, wolves and mountain lions. If their populations aren't kept in check, they damage the land in their overgrazing and once that's gone, they suffer mass famine where many of them die slow, painful deaths. I've read two different white-tailed deer books lately that really make sense of this situation. And not in the big macho, "I'm a hunter and I wanna kill great big trophies for mah wall!!" kind of way. Instead, they were written from a conservationist's point of view though the type of intelligent conservationist where many things are considered and added up logically before saying that some animals should be killed so that the others may remain healthy. Not one of the idiotic PETA type of conservationist.

The moisture that keeps them plumped up dries out and they shrink. Living things really are mostly water.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FossilFeather In reply to HawthornHare [2010-04-10 21:27:36 +0000 UTC]

Actually shipping was only $15 compared to the $50 that it would have been to have had her whole body shipped.

The standard coyote colors are most common though it's harder to find yotes with those same colors well-defined. There are also lighter shades and darker variations of those same colors. Black ones are pretty rare and white ones are super, super rare.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HawthornHare In reply to FossilFeather [2010-04-11 21:53:00 +0000 UTC]

That's good for you, I suppose with shipping, weight isn't as important as with flying things. I can see why you'd want to do the paws & face yourself, I love the paws the most of pelts

Sounds more or less the same as red foxes, those silvers & other exotic ones would never occur in the wild here.

I think coyotes are so beautiful, definitely under rated (probably due to the grey wolf thing most people have... Admittedly me too, but I can appreciate other species too). Do they have a very varied range of vocal ability?
