Description
Alder's Prelude - Mix Up Part2This is kind of a joke at people who just seem to feel the need to have to advertise their baby's gender with clothes. It just seems like people are just terrified their baby girl might be mistaken for a boy or vise versa.
Ashien here doesn't care that people are making this mix up. It's just confusing her.
The first part was the straight line so this is the punch. There is Adler looking all girlie, but she just doesn't get it.
If he was to get any more cute I think I would have to put a diabetic warning on these comics.
I like that Ashien is alone in the tub with Adler and she's talking to him like he's part of the conversation. He's just making random sounds and enjoying splashing around in the tub.
Hardest part of this was that first panel. Drawing Japanese architecture was really hard. It's just all the angles. It took a few tries to get the hang of things.
There were some real nice techniques used on this page. Also quite a few layered effects. One of my favorite touches is that bit of spray from Adler's splashing.
I realized too late that I made a small goof. In the fourth panel I should of had Ashien looking in the opposite direction. That way the format of my layout would flow to the next panel better. It's a trick I learned for layouts from the "How to Draw Manga" series published by Antarctic Press. It advises to try and have the character look or have it flow in the direction of the next panel. I know it's not a set in stone rule, but I think it would of helped here.
Hope you enjoy and feel free to post comment.

I don't have any kids. I just imagine her to be a VERY different kind of manga mother.
She's a woman who, growing up, never imagined he would be a mother one day. Despite that, it's something that brought her great joy.

Dawww.... to risk sounding like a total perv, I would give my life savings to trade places with Adler.
But my hormones aside, absolutely adorable all around. I just love your comics, you should consider making your webcomics into a job or something. Hell, Fred Perry did it, and you draw just as well as he does.
I say equally because Fred Perry's the man X3 I actually got to meet him once in Comic Con.

Well, Adler gets to pretty much breast feed only. She doesn't use the bottle.
I don't think she'd want a full grown person sitting on her belly like that.
I rail against the idea that I do a good a job as Fred Perry. He's far more skilled then I am.

Aw, you're talented and modest too ^^ But it's not really fair to compare any artist to anyone else, I should've remembered that before writing that comment, so first I wanna apologize for that.
Second, Fred Perry is an amazing artist, and a really cool guy as well. He was very nice to me in person, and even took the time to look at my artwork. I bought his 2 DVD comic collection, and he gave me the latest G.D. issue, signed, for free. It's just so good to see someone so successful still knows how to connect with his fans.
All other things aside, Ashien and Adler are extremal adorable ^^ I like how Ashien is a shameless nudist who obviously doesn't have modesty issues. It makes her all the more lovable. Plus having her son Adler makes her even more lovable as a mother figure.

I enjoy that people ca see some similarities between our styles. This manga style has always been more fun.
It would be such a thrill if I knew that Fred Perry ever saw this gallery.
Ash has a very dark and violent past. Her love for her child is something that really helps her soft and kind side grow.

Dawww <3 Ash sounds like she's got a real story to tell :3 I hope you get the chance to start a comic seires or TV show.
On a side note, If you ever want hosting for a web comic, look me up!
Would it be okay if I where to ask you more about her? Maybe over a note or something if you wanna keep it out of the public eye.

Babies are very gender neutral. It doesn't really matter. I just always found it funny how people over dress their babies as whatever gender.

It's just baby talk. I just used "fuga" as a joke. She talks to Adler as if he understands. He just responds in a way.

Its so interesting to see how you did the water and how it reflects off of the wet skin.
Loves it! The story concept isnt to shabby either, but I already commented on that in the earlier inks

Excellent job, as it has been said, with the expressions.
Though, I'd have to disagree with what you said about the 4th panel. If Ashien were too look off to the next panel and down it would give the idea that Alder had moved out of the bath or at least off to the side. Instead the 3rd panel set up the idea that when she looked down that she was looking at Alder

Thanks.
I think changing the direction of that panel in the drawings wouldn't of changed Adler's position. She's would still be looking down and between her legs, where Adler is sitting.
The fourth panel directs people's eyes left and down.

It looks pretty and the splashes are a nice touch. I don't mind that Adler's facing in a new direction in the last panel. Babies move. It leads the eye back to the left (rather than to the right, off-panel), which makes them take a second look at the strip, which is fine for the the punch line panel. I think head angles going the same way is more important earlier in the strip to lead the eye to the next frame.

Thanks. I liked that splatter effect for the spray. I used some watered down paint and splattered some paper with a toothbrush. I scanned that and used that in some photo manipulation.
What do you mean he's facing a new direction? That last panel with Adler is shot from Ashien's POV. You can see her legs in the shot.

You're welcome!
Yes, I picked up that the baby was seen from Mom's pov, which I like very much by the way. What I was trying to explain (rather badly, I'm afraid) is the that the direction in which Adler's eyes and head were turned worked well visually in terms of the whole page. You used line and other devices such that eye is directed toward the right in the first three panels (to keep you reading) and to the left in the last panel, which brings the eye back for a second look at the cartoon, rather having the eye exiting the page at the bottom right. This kind of layout is based on the way we read English going across the page, left to right. Where the eye goes as it looks at the art on the comic book page is something I try to convey to my students when they doing rough page layouts.
