Description The first time i submitted this, i couldnt find anywhere for it, and the second time i submitted it...i still cant find a category...
Onto the actual deviation!
A long time ago, my grandfather gave my mother the chess pieces that she and he used to play with during her childhood. Recently, I found these chess pieces and after hearing the story behind it, was rather saddened to discover there was no chess board (life has a habit of losing such things) so, in a fit of madness, i decided to make one.
There are sixty four sqaures, each individually done in one of four patterns, and lets not even start on the actual lines - all done in blackwork by hand! And I was even madder by deciding to do this on fabric!
It nows sits in a picture frame, and many fellow chessplayers comment on how nice it is to play the game on something other than wood or plastic. And my mum was very happy seeing the old pieces played with, so it was worth the agony...

This is lovely - I did one of these once, with the black squares all different patterns in black and gold, but mine was from a pattern. To have designed this yourself - wow. *whylde applawse*

What a great background to this piece and what a lovely gesture for your mother. I've not tried any blackwork myself. It seems so lovely, maybe it's time I did. You did a fantastic job especially doing it on fabric. I know linen is especially fine and it's quite a trick to keep the stitches even.

Thanks, if you can do backstitch, then blackworks easy, its just very time consuming for the amount of fabric covered, it took me about 30-45 minutes a square!

The idea is simply brilliant. The embroidery really makes your chess the game of kings.
I admire everyone who can play chess.

It's beautiful! when I saw it on I had to pass it on to another stitcher so she could appreciate it as well! I love the story behind it, makes the entire thing so much MORE precious

Thank you! I'm glad you like it and appreciate the story, I tend to find that people who dont play chess really dont get this at all.

My children and I play, but my oldest son was taught by his paternal grandpa which, to both he and I , is something we both appreciate. Your story about the history of the pieces really touched me in that same way. And now you have added to that story which makes it that much MORE special. I so thank you for sharing!!

Absolutely gorgeous. Sounds like the kind of project where you get 1/10 of the way into it and realize that you've lost your mind, and then you just keep working. Bravo!

Too long, about two weeks, but it was the holidays, if it was during uni time it would probably have taken me more like two months.
thankyou for the comment!

I suddenly want to do something like this for my chessboard that I lost the board from. This is beautiful! (and looks very time consuming...)

It was, but its worthwhile, and its a brilliant topic point when you're setting up a game of chess...
My only advice is, if you do decide to make one, do a little practice sqaure in whatever pattern you use to make sure the biggest chess piece you have fits. I had to modify my pattern a few times as the sqaures dwarfed my pieces originally...

Beautiful! I have no patience for embroidery, but it's always been something I'd like to sit down and really try some day. Keep up the great work
