Description
As I went out to tend the yard today, I came across this most curious structure. It had an odd, ovoid shape, and was made almost entirely of leaves. It seems to be a nest of some kind.On first examination it appears to be merely a loose collection of leaves. However, upon closer scrutiny, I discovered the leaves were held together with a semi-opaque, viscous liquid. I have sent a sample of this liquid to a laboratory for testing, though I suspect it may be some kind of natural glue, secreted from the builder of the nest.
The nest was large. I measured the inner diameter to be approximately 4 feet, and the outer diameter five feet, lengthwise.
As there was a mild storm last night, I believe it may be the nest of a juvenile thunderbird, though this would not explain the liquid. Also discrediting the thunderbird hypothesis, is that it appeared over night, since it was not there yesterday, and all indications seem to point towards the thunderbird being diurnal, not nocturnal. Plus, as I was up all last night, and the nest appeared adjacent to the window I was by all last night, I believe I would have at least heard the beast as it was constructing it's nest.
That leads me to believe that it may in fact be the mothman, a strange, owl-like creature, come to visit our humble Washington city. If his wings are equally owl-like, that may explain why I failed to notice him outside. And if he is an insect, as his name seems to suggest, then that may explain the glue.
If it is the mothman, I pray nothing happens to the bridge...
Whatever the origin of my frankly amazing find, it is clearly not manmade, as no gentleman of the Queen's tongue would ever be capable of engineering this shoddy. A man constructing an ovoid structure out of leaves, indeed!
Sadly, I had little time to examine it before some strange men wearing all black came and demolished the nest, confiscated it's materials, and treated the area with something which I can only assume was meant to erase any trace evidence of the nest or it's builder. I hope it doesn't harm my lawn...
For those curious, I managed to get the sample and take this picture, along with two others, before they arrived. I don't think they know about the pictures, though I would be surprised if I got back the results on my sample.
