Description Now, before acting like a fucking dumbass, read the entire description.

Why? It taught us values.
Granted, it may have but it also taught us hatred and intolerance towards people, see the big past for example, salem witch trials, Templar crusades.

It won't get rid of anything!
Yes, it may not but it would get greatly reduce bigotry, racism, sexism and all the other things, and we'd be less divided. And yes, there'd still be jackasses around like Stalin for example but at least less people would've died, because we'd have less motivations for things like the Holocaust, WBC, etc.

And what would this exactly accomplish?
We'd have advanced research, space travel, cures for deadly diseases (stem cell research), ability to regrow limbs (stem cell research) and many things stem cell research would have.

And what would we lose?
Holidays and death tolls, to be honest, it sounds like a fair trade, especially since I don't celebrate holidays.

I'm not saying that religion has caused all problems, I'm just saying that we could do without it because mankind used it wrong, and if you want to do it right, just focus on love and tolerance (no pony reference intended) instead.

Yeah, true. Getting rid of religion wouldn't fix a thing.

He didn't say by what means. Religion can be decreased through normal education and getting people to think and question. Hence why there are more atheists in well-educated countries, generally speaking. That doesn't violate rights.

Actually, China does have very high academic standards. Chinese students beat American students. Although given some of China's other more severe problems (tyrannical government, for one), I'm guessing that was supposed to be some sort of rebuttal. Obviously countries with a history of communism are going to naturally have a higher level of atheism. Personally, however, I was thinking more along the lines of Scandinavian countries: low religion, good economies, and good education.

I see, but I don't think religion is indicative of intelligence. Β There have been several Christian scientists and writers after all.

The fact that there are intelligent religious people and stupid atheists does not disprove that there exists a trend. Β www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknew… That being said, the trend (correlation) does not imply causation, but I do think it is likely that intelligent people tend to doubt religion more (on average).

Bonus points if you can get rid of the people abusing it. The sad thing is that everyone just wants quick exits to questions like "Who made this?","Where do we come from?" and stuff.

I'm all for getting rid of religion. It is useful to many people, but it causes more problems than it's worth.

That said, not all religions are based on intolerance and rules. Some, such as Buddhism, are focused on self-improvement and being at peace with oneself. The world could use a little self-improvement.
So perhaps we shouldn't get rid of religion; we should get rid of monotheism.

Some people cannot function in an atheist lifestyle. There's nothing wrong with believing in any sort of god; only with abusing it. Having that sort of omnipotent parental figure is a comforting ideal. However, when someone insists that their imaginary friend is going to damn homosexuals to hell... well... that's less acceptable.

In short; I agree with your main argument, but there are some factors that must be considered. Then again, it's little more than wishful thinking, so details don't make much of a difference. ^^

If there was a way to get rid of religion without stepping on peoples rights, I would agree. I know the argument "Even without religion, we will still find things to fight about!!"
Maybe we will, but we don't be trapped my dogma that stops progress. That's the main problem with religion, they say it's perfect so there's no room for change and reform.

You know, even though I am a Christian, I can totally understand why you feel this way. I've seen a lot of stupid shits on Facebook who claim to be "true Christians", but then says "God hates ______" and tell people that they are going to hell for laughing at something that is only somewhat offensive.

But too, even though a lot of people can be little fucknuggets about their religion, some people have actually done their homework and treat people how they deserve to be treated and not in a way that they think is "right" or whatever. But those kinds of people, sadly, seem to be in the minority

Now I find myself not even fucking knowing anymore. I say there could be some dude out there, and there might not be. Only way to find out is to die. I don't think he did half the stuff the bible says. If he WAS real, he wouldn't judge you by what you blindly believed in out of 47748545 different things, but how you lived your life.

... Unless he's a troll. Then we're all going to hell. lD

ObscureMemories In reply to ??? [2012-08-07 20:26:32 +0000 UTC]

I think it's okay that people have something to believe in, but the problem is the people, humans.

Man wrote the bible and all bibles in that matter, and because of this book, which is to me, no more than a fairy tale, if the bible is real, then the Little Mermaid is real. No man/woman has the right to speak for "God" so hate the gays and hate everything else is false. People constantly remind us God loves everyone, so why does he/she hate gay people? Man wrote that. A man who clearly hated gay people. Nothing else. The problem is, Humans. Thinking they speak for God. Gay people don't have the right to marry, God said so, who the fuck are you to speak for God. Get out.

Oh little rant there. lol But do you get what I'm trying to say? But I highly doubt getting rid of it would help research and space travel, last I checked that had nothing to do with Religion.

So? Those holidays give people a chance to see their families when they wouldn't otherwise. Even if people don't specifically celebrate the holiday a lot of them appreciate the chance to get to see their family or just have a break.

AlienGuardian In reply to Cr1kk3t [2012-09-24 01:49:03 +0000 UTC]

Christmas is practically secular now. People from many (or no) religion celebrate it as a family-driven event, instead of a spiritual one.

Cr1kk3t In reply to AlienGuardian [2012-09-27 03:00:39 +0000 UTC]

That's kind of the point I was trying to make. :/ I guess I didn't do so well. I still celebrate it as a spiritual one even though I know Jesus wasn't born then. Although I like the secular part too. Like decorating the tree and giving presents. I like receiving them too, but I really like giving things. XD

Yes but they shouldn't have to be religious, and I refuse to participate in any holiday, only New Year's (I jokingly call it Jew Year), because we get to go to another awesome/shitty year.

Cr1kk3t In reply to Fragdog [2012-08-07 21:51:14 +0000 UTC]

As of right now they aren't really religious. There are a bunch of secular traditions involved in our holidays. Event he religious ones. It's basically a combination of a lot of things.

Christmas isn't a religous holiday and can be celebrated by ANYONE, I come from a family of athiests and we even celebrate; I just ignore the religous side of things and look to the other posative aspects.
