Description This is a preliminary skeletal reconstruction of the new Gojira based on available toys, models, and photos. Little is known about the history of this beast-god except that the US military apparently knew about it and tried to kill it in the 1950s with hydrogen bombs. Dr. Serizawa indicates that it is an ancient animal, possibly older than the dinosaurs and maybe know from some fossil remains. Evolving at a time when the radiation levels on Earth surface were much higher than today, this monster lives at the bottom of the ocean now closer to volcanic vents and elevated levels of radiation. Attempts to kill it with hydrogen bombs in 1954 were unsuccessful and the creature went into hibernation after a full-on nuclear attack by the US government. Its existence remained top secret until a series of Earth changing events led to its rapage in 2014. Legends about the creature's attacks led to creation of the famous Gojira (Godzilla) movies from Japan and its general acceptance as a myth and fantasyΒ by the general populace. All that changed when the creature made its appearance in the western hemisphere early in the 21st century. I'll update this restoration as better images become available, but for now, thanks for looking.

I presume this Godzilla is some kind of ancient crocodylomorph with gills. I may be wrong though.

According to the tie-in prequel comic, his kind lived during the Permian mass extinction event - possible some sort of tetrapod.Β

An armored, crocodile-like tetrapod? That's a possibility, but that doesn't explain why his posture is more like an archosaur.

Perhaps convergent evolution?

Much of that was framed as speculation. For example, the cause of the Permian extinction being a comet/asteroid impact is speculative in the real world. Looking at his anatomy, he appears to be an archosaur of some kind, which would mean Triassic at the earliest.Β

I am just going by what the comics say. I mean, it is a movie after all. But one thing that is weird is that he has gills. What archosaur has gills?

Maybe his kind is more adapted to live on the ocean, or he developed the gills after he was mutated by the radiation, or perhaps a unique trait exclusive to his kind? We may never know.

well godzilla did encounter aliens in the past so mabye they had a part in it but the point is it's godzilla and we should just be glad for that

At this point we do not know if the Legendary version of Godzilla came into contact with aliens, or if they even exist in his Universe.

Well Garett Edwards said that the sequel might have king ghidorah so maybe

King Ghidorah has been confirmed.

So I guess aliens are apart of the new series and besides the series is about a giant dinosaur that breaths atomic fire would aliens really be the most bizarre thing in the godzilla universe

Hopper9 In reply to Creature218 [2014-08-20 06:15:41 +0000 UTC]

I didn't say that. I just said we don't know if aliens are going to be in these movies or not... Just because King Ghidorah is in this doesn't mean he is alien... remember GMK? I am sure he will be but we don't know for sure. That is what I am saying. Also just because he may be alien doesn't mean that Godzilla has come in contact with aliens in the past. That is what I am saying.

By that I mean it's kind of silly at least in concept but hey it's Japanese and still awesome

According to Dr. Serizawa it's something very ancient, pre-dinosaurian, and possibly known from some fossils (if the skeletal drawing in the movie means anything). Otherwise, your guess is as good as any.

Dude, this guy's bigger than most buildings in most major cities. I don't think a museum is going to cover it.

They shouldn't reconstruct the bones in standing position. The skull is enough

I was planning doing something similar, just to see what his skeleton would look like, but it looks like you beat me too it! I only got as far as the skull and his feet, but I like your approach more. Just a suggestion, you should give himΒ palprebal bones over his eyes since his eyes were modeled after an eagle's. Good job.Β

BTW, the according to interviews, the Godzilla movies don't exist within the movie's universe. Edwards was just explaining their approach to the design. His new origin is a bit different, but I'll let you look that up if you want to; I don't want to spoil it if you don't want to know.Β
