I think you should actually avoid using black for this sort of thing -- or any shading, actually. It's always better to use colors, warm shadows when it's a cool base, and cool shadows when it's a warm base. Though of course that depends on what ambient you have.
But black in general is avoided, because it can make your colors look muddy. Since the picture in question seems to be a sunset or something to that sort, it would be best to use some warm color like red or orange for the shadow.

You are right about we should using colors depend on each ambient. But I disagree with you about avoid using black and black make colors look muddy, I did used color shadow sometime, black shadow and color shadow give off diffrent vibes and colors shadow make things more muddy to my point of view, especially when the character has opposite colors with the shadow color.
I don't know how everyone like, but I prefer using black shadow and let the Screen Soft Brush layer do the colors work, it look more contrast this way Certainly only when I use this lazy trick
The right way is shade each part little by little with diffrent color and saturation.
