Well, the reason I say 'don't use black' is because in real life, shadows aren't black: they're just a color with less light, or more often than not, end up being closer to the ambient color because light bounces. You can notice right away when someone is using a black layed with varied opacity for their shadows, because of the 'muddy' feel to it. Every "how to shade/color theory" article or tutorial I've read seems to agree, too, that black is the last color you want to use to shade, whether it's as a solid black or a low-opacity shadow.
Of course, you don't always need to use complementary colors, or the color of the ambient -- but you might benefit from sticking to your palette colors. You should try out a multiply layer: Create a clipping layer, just like you did in this quick trick tutorial, but instead of lowering opacity and using black, pick a color that compliments your palette, even if it's a bright color. Then, go to the layer options and select "multiply", and just color in the shadows as you normally would. It gives it a whole other feeling, and you can use gradients or extra clipping layers to add depth to it.
Well, assuming you don't already know that. xD This is purely based on the quick trick above, since I actually haven't gone through the rest of your gallery.
