I'm just gonna say this now, I like Infinite. I like his design, and voice. Plus, I don't find how he was written to be all that bad. Compared to Mephiles, I just find him better over all. Hell, I'll even say that in terms of backstory.

Granted, Infinite's backstory could've been executed better, but I actually liked what they tried to do considering how a lot of villains are built up around this concept (Ex. Venom from Spiderman). His entire squad was destroyed by Shadow, who manages to kick Infinite's ass. Shadow pretty much tells him to "fuck off," leaving Infinite raging. This is why everyone hates Infinite alone since it feels poorly executed, and I made fun of it to... I wont lie there. But think about it, his entire squad was annihilated and was humiliated by Shadow. The fact that he couldn't enact some revenge alone made him crave for more power, hence the Phantom Ruby.

My problem with Mephiles though isn't so much his backstory though, but rather his plan. Some made the argument that Mephiles killed Sonic, so he's better, and while that Infinite could've killed Sonic at the Luminous Forest, there are three problems with this argument.

1.) If he wanted to make Princess Elise cry just to release Iblis, then why doesn't he just do it himself? Taking words from Clement's Review, just push her down a flight of stairs or better yet, just kill her. For one, he'd be doing the world a favor if he did, and two, if Elise dying on the Egg Carrier Crashing releases Iblis, Information that he already knew, why doesn't he do just that? It would give him a better reason to kill Sonic.

2.) If Mephiles could kill Sonic that easily, why doesn't he just do that from the start? This dude can Time Travel. In fact... Why bother targeting Elise to begin with?

3.) Mephilies can time travel and he could've joined with Iblis at any point when Iblis was out. I can see why he wouldn't pick the future considering how he needs Iblis in his purest form. What about when they both split in the past, or when Elise died on the Egg Carrier? All he would need is one Chaos Emerald and he'll merge with Iblis and become Solaris.

At least with Infinite, he actually puts his abilities to better use and manages to defeat Sonic in the beginning of Forces. He also manages to put Shadow in this Virtual Reality Trip, and considering how annoying that stage (Virtual Reality) is, I can see why he would think it would kill Shadow.

As far as preference goes, I like Infinite's design just for the mask and glitch effects alone, and I'll certainly take Liam O' Brian's performance over Dan Green's take on Mephiles any day of the week.

Infinite is by no mean's perfect, but I'll gladly take him over Mephiles.
