Wow! I really like this redesign. The yellow is really nice - it adds feeling to it all, somehow. It's definitely a good buffer and honestly, I don't know why this idea hasn't been used in the DC canon yet! My favorite part is the cape.
I also quite like how you made Clark and Superman look DIFFERENT. Rather than Clark being Superman with glasses and formal clothes, you made them each very expressive and the different hair is really a nice touch!
Great job! I'd love to see this in the comics!

Thanks very much for the kind words! Hey, guess what...I actually used the same head for Clark and Superman, with different hair and expressions, to make sure that the disguise would work.

Insta-FAV!. I like the description in the pic. I want to keep reading but it stops... I like the designs as well they fit his "persona" really well. the reading glasses are a much loved touch as well, they give him an air of clumsy dignity thats really important in his case. the Sol panels on his suit are cool, the dayglow is a nice touch, and seeing as hes so dang power there's no need for stealth anyway soo... But... Idea!!! make the crest detachable.
trust me the possibilities are all...

Uuh but should his cape be that big? its almost floor length. I wanna say... mid calf? or lower thigh. the floor length thing is well, a mite overdone mans. but thats just me man.

GavinMichelli In reply to ZixaxiZ [2011-07-26 17:17:56 +0000 UTC]

His cape is totally floor length! Longer than that, even! I just like the idea of his cape being effing huge. It makes him look more regal, I think. The way I see it, Superman should exude an aura of power and authority (after all, people like Batman and Wonder Woman take marching orders from this guy). The long cape gives him more of a presence. Plus, he can rescue more babies from burning buildings by tucking them into his humungous cape.

But sure, the crest can be detachable. Why not, right?

ZixaxiZ In reply to GavinMichelli [2011-08-01 10:58:21 +0000 UTC]

True true, big capes are impressive, a mite risky though. They can get stuck in things... Anyway the crest. Think 'sheild' if he's being beaten down by a Kryptonite powered bad guy. Or... something to use to protect loved ones. e.g. say lois is in trouble... and he cant stay with her cause there are a large number of people at risk, so he leaves the crest with her so she can protect herself from stuff and as a momento or something to give her strength in dark hours mans, as mentioned. So many possibilities. All epic.

I agree that Clark should not be played as a dork or clown. He's a very quiet and reserved person who is considered to be an intellectual. Clark Kent is a brilliant detective which makes him a top investigative reporter. When he disappears during trouble most don't think of him as being timid or cowardly. They know Kent works best alone and that he's on the case. And they know that Superman is friends with him because of his skill as a detective. They've seen the few times Clark is forced into a fight in which he fights defensively and owns the one who started the brawl.

I'm also on the boat that thinks everyone assumes Superman has no secret identity. In fact he makes a point of being seen in public, out of uniform, (dressed more casually than Clark), to add to the theory.

That's my take on it.

Diakron79 In reply to ??? [2011-07-05 04:00:59 +0000 UTC]

I like what you did with the designs on the suit, but the description that it was made by humans really bothers me. I don't buy that idea at all. It doesn't make sense to me due to the fact that this being is from an highly-advanced race and all that technology are provided @ his Fortress of Solitude. The idea of having Star Labs to provide his needs makes his heritage irrelevant.
This is one of the reasons I'm miffed on the overly-modernization of Superman. Make him earthbound and you hack-off the majesty & otherworldly aspects of this being.

But on the whole, I love the visual designs you did with Superman & CK.

GavinMichelli In reply to Diakron79 [2011-07-05 15:48:48 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm...I'm actually pretty conflicted about this point you've made. First off, let me just say that the only reason that it was made at STAR is that it seems to be where he gets all of his modified super-suits from, in the comics and in the animated shows. That's just about all the thought that went into it

But now that you've brought this point up, I have to say that I kinda disagree. Yes, he's from a highly advanced race...and, when a fan redesigns his suit, that's pretty much the explanation that they give for it. It's a Kryptonian war suit, or some such. And actually, I really like the explanation of the "S" being the standard of the House of El. But the more he starts to rely on alien tech, the less human he comes across at his core. Yes, his cells and DNA are alien, but his soul and his character are human. This is what separates him from say Batman: even though Bats is technically a human being, his soul has been twisted by tragedy and will into something different. In short, Supes is more human than some humans.

If he operated using only alien tech, and came in with his Kryptonian flag held high, then Lex Luthor would be right about him. His very existence would belittle human achievement. But he doesn't. He lives and works among the human race, and he seeks out human allies and friends. In this way, he inspires human achievement, rather than belittling it.

As for him exuding a sense of majesty...well, I think that comes with how he's drawn. That's also why I draw his cape extra long, and why his posture looks like something out of a marble sculpture. When he puts that cape on, he should exude a sense of authority that is so powerful, that even people like Batman and Wonder Woman would be willing to follow his orders. To me, this has less to do with his origins than with the strength of his character, the way that he carries himself, and with his actions. This is all stuff that he learned from the Kents, not the Kryptonians.

Wow, that was long. Sorry

I like the design skills! Especially like the design 101 tips as well, makes perfect sense too.
I do have to say the more I look at it I see Supergirl, due to the wrists and cape is exactly like hers. While it makes sense, I just cant help thinking superGIRL before superMAN

You theory on Clark Kent is well thought out as well and if he can fool the world with a pair of glasses it is no less silly to think in general people wouldnt care as much about a normal guy like clark

Great Job!

Yeah, it was very much inspired by Supergirl, mostly because her costume is better It's just like Superman's, but put together with a more harmonious color palette. It sucks that they changed her outfit

This is easily my favorite image from you ever. Th process is well thoght out, and executed. The theory is solid, and thte design follows suit (no pun intended) absolute wins (in my opinion) are the Boots, accents, "S" design, belt, cuffs and hair on Superman. On Clark, his demeanor is appropriate although with Clark its 90% your thought process that I admired. I liked Clark in Superman Returns, mildly goofy just not tripping over himself, just regular, "normal" not 100% dialed in ALL THE TIME! I wish you were selling this a s a print, Id buy one in a heartbeat!

The reasoning behind how Superman acts when he is 'disguised' as Clark is what John Bryne had in mind when he did his re-design.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GavinMichelli In reply to USSteele [2011-07-04 17:04:17 +0000 UTC]

That's probably why I feel that way about Clark, haha! The Superman I grew up with had both his parents, an arch-enemy who was a corporate mogul, and a Bat-buddy that he fought with as much as he co-operated with. It seems like the DCU is almost reverting back to it's Silver Age self, and (as much as I love the Silver Age for what it was) I think that's kind of a shame.
