Awesome tutorial. I tried it, but I think I rolled it a little too much instead of having three sections of seeds I only have one ; ha.

Everything went really good, until the reducing step.
Ohgod, it looked like a mess and there was no way you could tell it was a tomato
I hate the reducing part. Always fail on that..

i know, it's always the most difficult step. you really don't want to know what my first lemons looked like...
but i'm sure practice will help you to get it right

Wow, using the chalk pastel and mixing it in is a WHOLE lot cheaper then buying different colored clay, isn't it? I never thought about doing that before >.< Thank you!

geekySquirrel In reply to To-Ka-Ro [2011-04-10 11:12:12 +0000 UTC]
it's not only cheaper, but some colours just don't exist pre-mixed. plus you often need just a little amount of colours and why buy a whole package for that? i usually buy black/white/transparent and then just a small range of colours like yellow (more than blue and pink), blue and pink. you can mix the rest yourself then, for example pink and yellow make red, yellow and blue make green, green and red make brown and so on... for the special colours you can always use the chalk or for little adjustments. just be sure to wash your fingers afterwards to get rid of the chalk

Wow, a cane tutorial that doesn't use that much clay!!! This is perfect, since I have to buy my Sculpey in another city/country (I live near Mexico/USA border). I think I'll try it when I have some spare time, thanks for sharing! ^^

Glad you like it. I also buy my clay far from home, there is no art supplies shop near here and in DIY markets, you only get very basic types of clay. I usually order it on ebay.
I think in other tutorials, they only use so much clay for educational purposes, so you can see better what they're doing. Or maybe if they need lots of slices

Thank you a lot! I took a real tomato slice as my reference, maybe that did the trick. The key to success is abstraction. My first try was a little better, but since this is a tutorial I guess it's ok
