So the most important part is to smudge and blur to our hearts' contents?

just observe where the light is supposed to hit the character. most likely opposite of the shadow parts

So, it's a matter of familiarizing the tools and layers, isn't it? Smudge/blur tools for shading, bucket tool to bring out your desired color upon the layer, and etc. Hmm...I think digital coloring is much easier than what I have expected.
I'd better print this out someday for reference, but for now, I'd included it as my fave for me to read on from time to time. And thanks, too!
