After an unexpected, inexplicable, inexcusable five month hiatus, the next page of the tutorial is finally up! You can all thank JKSketchy for this one—her birthday gift lit a spark in me to finally come up with a new page. To be honest, I had been debating off and on since January what this page would look like, but yesterday, I decided to just start and see where inspiration would lead me. And six hours (and one late night) later, here's where it led me.
You'll notice that for looking both up and down, the bottom of the eye is visible. That way, the cheeks stay defined and there's more room for the mouth. Of course, if you want to give the mouth even more room, push the cheek up into one (or both) eyes, as you can see here. Being able to move the mouth around gives the expression even more impact.
Happy un-birthday, everyone! And thanks for all the birthday greetings! The next page won't be as prolonged, I swear!

I love this tutorial! Usually I draw cartoons pretty well by practicing to redraw screen shots, but your tutorial has brought me that extra mile for understanding some things I didn't get before! I can't wait til you get to the part about the body, which I find to be the most difficult aside from the eyes.
I also love how you describe everything. Being a person who loves both math and drawing, I can actually understand this better than most other tutorials. (Although my brother is still trying to figure out what a 'tangent' is lol)
Anyway, this is awesome and I will be keeping an eye out for the next page! Sorry for the long comment spam!

Glad you like the tutorial! Yeah, math and art are two of my favourite things, so it seemed only natural to combine them together.
If it helps, you can explain the tangent line as if it were a board leaning against a pipe. Physical explanations often come across better than theoretical 2-D space definitions.

My geometry teacher just taught us about tangents and even used a drawing activity to explain it. It amazes me how the two just intertwine.
My textbook wasn't much help, but that seemed to work! Thanks!

For sure! (Just from the one pic I've seen of Simia, you draw him pretty well already. )

Good to know I tend to run out of room when it comes to where the mouth goes a lot

It's funny—some of the tips in this tutorial I've only recently discovered myself. I had a huge fear of "breaking the rules" (like stretching limbs and contorting faces), but then I realized, that's how they get those over-the-top expressions!
