Description As I promised to some of the people here, I'm releasing the first tutorial here.

This is the tutorial for how to do soft cell shading on Photoshop, based on my experience.

The version of Photoshop used in the tutorial is 6. If you use later versions, names of tools/modes and/or allocation of shortcut keys might be different.
I'm working on Windows, so if you use Mac please change these notations as: Ctrl to Command, Alt to Option.

I just hope it helps you.

I don't understand the masking/grouping part. I just tried doing that and it doesn't remove the stuff outside the base color. What additional steps are there?

Otherwise, I love this tutorial, I shall try it out in more depth. I'm just trying different techniques listed in here before making a new art piece in entirety.

If you have Photoshop CS or later, and Ctrl-G didn't work, use Ctrl-Alt-G instead. The name of funcution has been also changed as "Create clipping mask".

I decided to elaborate on this part of the step for my friend in a tutorial.

I have PS7, and Ctrl G did work, but the stuff outside the base does not go away. but I discovered the reason why--I was trying to group to the 'Background' layer. XD No wonder why. But man, this is really nifty! Never again will I have to painstainkly erase every single thing outside of lines.

thank you so much! I will happily show this link to many of my friends--they will love you for it.

Every time I make a new layer and put it under the lineart, the color wont show up on the picture. What do you think's wrong with it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

getty In reply to Black-Platinum [2008-03-16 08:18:54 +0000 UTC]

The lineart is on a white-pixel-filled layer.

This is my second comment xD

The whole tutorial is great, but I don't really understand the line softening portion. I can lock my transparency and everything, but how can I make the lines soft?
