Description
As I promised to some of the people here, I'm releasing the first tutorial here. This is the tutorial for how to do soft cell shading on Photoshop, based on my experience.
The version of Photoshop used in the tutorial is 6. If you use later versions, names of tools/modes and/or allocation of shortcut keys might be different.
I'm working on Windows, so if you use Mac please change these notations as: Ctrl to Command, Alt to Option.
I just hope it helps you.

Use Ctrl-Alt-G for creating clipping mask on CS and later instead of Ctrl-G.

Enormously helpful! I've been trying to figure out how to do the really in-depth coloring since I don't have a tablet, just a laptop mouse and those things are so very clumsy. You described everything very well, and I'm so happy I found this tut. :3 <3

I can't get the lineart transparent Am I doing something wrong? I've alreday scanned the lineart, it's clean and ready to be colored. But I can't find a way to make the lineart-layer turn transparent!
And I can't make the background white either... the background is transparent and the lineart is not. Could you please help me??

You've scanned the lineart, and please follow my lineart tut to make the white pixels transparent.

This is such a great tutorial. It's the first one I've found that goes through everything but moves at a good pace so that it's not dragging along but it doesn't miss anything out. And you explained everything clearly! Thank you! >hugs and never lets go<

This is a great tutorial, I learnt lots, but (yeah, there's a but) it doesn't really cover the bit I have problems with... How do you determine where the shading needs to go?

getty In reply to OracleX7 [2008-02-01 13:18:26 +0000 UTC]
It's not that "I shade this because I'm told to do so". For instance, some people put shades on even should-be-bright part, to give it higher frequencies. That kind of artistic expression is beyond this tutorial.
Though I thank you for loving it.

I've seen your tut before (long time ago, before even being a member of deviantarts) and seeing it again I had to comment how great it is.
I can't wait to try your coloring style in one of my drawings !

Getty, thank you so much for this.
I'm sure you're tired of reading that, but seriously, I love soft shaded anime *illustration* (not just cell shaded coloring) and I've always wondered how it's done I knew it wasn't just a simple technique, I could "fake" it, but I knew there was a better process.
There are some amazing digital illustrators out there, but many don't tell their secrets. Especially about the wonderful skin tones and background art.
You've helped me one more step up that ladder.
