Description
First off I have to thank *ScottPurdy for giving me a lot of pointers about how to approach this painting. It was definitely a challenge for me.When I went to the VCU Graphics Lab to have the original drawing scanned, the manager really liked it and told me that he wanted to see it when it was finished. When I showed it to him today, he said it was "awesome". He's a big fantasy fan himself.
For the original concept I wanted to really emphasize the contrast between the orcs and the gnolls (which is why the orcs are all clean-shaven). I was also aiming to make the whole scene bloody and brutal, but without muddying the composition. It was difficult to gauge the values on the spatters since Naphthamide Maroon (PR171) and Perylene Maroon (PR179) have such significant drying shifts (they dry a lot lighter than they appear when wet).
Ink, watercolour, casein on Twinrocker 200 lb. CP Watercolour Paper.

Im sorry to not be able to write a critique since im not a premium member. Otherwise id love too. This is one amazing piece of work. There are loads of emotion and action going on. You can feel the hate and hear the screams! It is also a fact of great note that you did this traditionally and not in a drawing program. Both the gnolls and the orcs , while races comonly used in many settings , have a distinct design that really is genuine. Finally , the colours are very good , they look natural and blend very well. I would like to see a bit more gore but thats just fine. Amazing , keep up the great work!

Dunno, those gnolls are scrappy.

I bet you've heard this a zillion times before but I fricking love the way you draw monsters! I'm digging the ogre guy getting impaled - despite the injury he's still like "Eff off, werewolf!"
In other words; awesome!

Thanks! Glad you like it!
The orc is probably saying to himself, "I should've eaten my Wheaties!"

Great work of chromatic colors, it looks really rustic and archaic.
The only thing I don't like is the facial expression of the big orc with the blade through his chest.
I don't care how tough somebody is, if that happened you would have a much more anguishing facial expression than a slight frown.

Thanks!
I was aiming for more of a "did I just get run through with a sword?" look, but I do see your point. I'll pay more attention to facial expressions in future pieces.

Ya I can see the idea you were aiming for.
But speaking from personally experience, plunge wounds very rarely offer much less than excruciating pain.

I always love your skies in watercolor, and I really like the shadowed battle in the background. It makes it look as if there's more going on, but doesn't make the picture look too busy.

To be honest, I kinda stumbled into that sky. I was just throwing colours around.

You're outdoing yourself! I see an issue with lack of movement (they look like they're standing around, not engaged in violent conflict) but this is really well done on many other levels.

I'm still trying to get my figures to look more alive. It's definitely something I have to work on.

I recommend examining good ol'DC and Marvel comics for that. Even where they fail in all else, they depend on dynamic movement. You don't even need to make a technical study of how they do it, if you immerse yourself enough the feel of action ends up rubbing off on you and reemerges in your own work – at least, it does for me

Nice work! It's good to see you paint something with a lot of depth in it, and the lighting has a very distinctive "crack of dawn" feeling.
