Description
First off I have to thank *ScottPurdy for giving me a lot of pointers about how to approach this painting. It was definitely a challenge for me.When I went to the VCU Graphics Lab to have the original drawing scanned, the manager really liked it and told me that he wanted to see it when it was finished. When I showed it to him today, he said it was "awesome". He's a big fantasy fan himself.
For the original concept I wanted to really emphasize the contrast between the orcs and the gnolls (which is why the orcs are all clean-shaven). I was also aiming to make the whole scene bloody and brutal, but without muddying the composition. It was difficult to gauge the values on the spatters since Naphthamide Maroon (PR171) and Perylene Maroon (PR179) have such significant drying shifts (they dry a lot lighter than they appear when wet).
Ink, watercolour, casein on Twinrocker 200 lb. CP Watercolour Paper.

I must say, I'm mighty impressed C: Definitely 'A' game material, man. There's a great visual flow to the composition, and as always the color is ace. I'd love to see your pieces in person, I'm sure they're even more great.

i love how the gnoll up in the right corner looks like the old dog compared to the rest, like the old guy in movies with that big ass white mustache.
scenes like this kick my ass, bloody good job! i was really looking forward to seeing this after you posted the lines for it. so what are the dimensions for it?

whoo!
You are on the top of your game! Prime coloring and amount of detail, just in the fact of how many things make it in the image! Great shading too
Plus.. c'mon... it's violent! >:3
keep up the awesomeness!

Darrenn, you totally pulled out the heavy guns with this one. Holy cats, I'm totally impressed. There's great depth to it and I'm loving the textures. I'm amused that the orcs show little, if at all, expression... even when being run through by a bigass blade. This came out great!

Your characters in-motion are already getting so much better. Really, really fantastic. I'd suggest you look into armor a bit. I don't know if your not using it is a style thing, but I think it'd be interesting to see how you pull it off.

Very cool. Though the similar colors seem to ask for something which "pops" in the scene. I really like it but I think it's lacking a more dynamic element (like a brightly colored Knoll warlock or something).

Yeah that's true, it doesn't really have an area of focus. I'll keep that in mind for future pieces.

You know, with a little tweaking I think you could get the blood to be the focus. Brighten it up and you can have a focal point with just a bit of photoshopping.

I'm impressed that you fit the entire chaotic scene on the page so that no scrolling is required in fullview, and every detail can be seen at that resolution

That's the beauty of scanning at 300dpi. Truth be told, the image isn't all that large to begin with. It's 9" x 12".

The usual good standard. A lot of things happening but not at all muddy or complicated to watch. Perhaps a bigger colour diffence between the orcs and the gnolls would make them more like two opposing forces but that might also have made it blurred.
Orcs or gnolls, it is hard to pick a favorite there.

I was thinking about that too, but I didn't want either the orcs or the gnolls to pop out any more than the others. Since the green orc skin would recede and the yellow gnoll fur would advance, I'd run into that issue if I went more towards saturated colours. It could have probably done with some more effective values, but I'm still working on that.
Whoever wins, they'll need a medic and a whole lot of bandages.

brutal! we really get to see the fierceness of your characters! good use of atmospheric perspective and i love the treatment of the weaponry. it's also nice to see some blues in the sky.
there are a few tangents that you may need to watch out for next time, but really, you've arranged the characters wonderfully. awesome!

Thank you! It was fun to show them all unleashed like that.
I see what you mean. Tangents are my nemeses; they always seem to pop up whenever I find a good compositional arrangement with lots of figures in space. I didn't want to crop that much on the figures themselves when I was sketching, so a few of them crept in here and there. It's something I agree I need to keep an eye on. Thanks for pointing that out!

Wow Darrenn. What can say...this is really good. One of your best pieces to date. This image is so much more complex than your previous works. Lots of action yet not overdone. It's got great sense of depth and good composition. Colors are nice too. You should feel proud.
It's going in my favorites.
