Description
i made this model for a international 3d competition, sponsored by Boxx workstations, (hence the name).the objective of the competition was to create a mining dorid, that is a self guided robot that has 3 operating modes, mine, flight and attack mode.
this model was done in 3d max, and the textures were done in photoshop.
i have spent allot of time and though in to this piece, and over all i like it very much ,
i planned this droid so that it will be a mass production, very crude, massive, like a catapillar, that will have no problem drilling ,and mining in the harshest enviorments, even his head and sensors were planned to take a beating and still function.
hope you guys like it

GREAT DROID!!!
how do you model your works? what i tend to do is trace part sides with the line tool and then bevel or extrude the face then convert it to editable mesh then mold it using the compound object option to subtract or add objects. the problem with this technique is that the mesh seems irregular on the inside and some faces are hard to texture, hence some pixel stretchings that are impossible to correct. I don't know how to use nurbs. also do you know how to add bones on a model and how to animate them?

thanks for the kind words, i generaly work with editeble poly, i start off with a simple box and extrude my way on, i generally start to model from the biggest part and work me way to the smallest piece. this technique is also a little bit difficult to texture, but you have the "element" sub selection to help you in textureing and selecting diffrent parts individually. the broblem with starting to build off with a 2d shape and extruding off of that is fine only for some parts, that are round or irregular, but they do tend to cause problems in the animaition even i you seal the off with the "cap" option.
i dont think that nerbs could help you as much, i use nerbs mostly for organic items since they are so rounded and "fluidic", createing a robot i with nerbs would be strange, but it might work.
adding bones, and using IK, is a little difficult at first, im not a expert on that issue, but i use bones only for orgainc stuff like a hand or a foot, that has a "skin", the bones create the actual movment and they strech the skin, but in this case i rigged the robot witout bones, beacuse the only moving parts are the actual parts of the robot, so i just linked what i tought needed to be linked, and created controlers to make it more easy to move and animate.
you might wanna check out the tutorial section in [link] they have some great tutorials there that can help you in understanding IK, bones, editable mesh , and textureing.
and if you have any questions i ll be happy to talk..

HOLY SH*T!
Thats tight!!!!
Yoo, u think if I can ever use one of this on one of my GFX Design? Ill give credit for the stock with your name and even link it here.
Anyways 10/10 - Really good quality and damn... it would be tight if this kind of robots were in the future.

sure, if you want you can use it , i dont know what you mean exactly by GFX design, but i checked out your work, and you got some fine stuff going on... so sure knock yourself out. let me know if you need anything.
thanks for the comments, and yeah, if todays robots can build cars and got for a drive on mars, i think in about 50 years, we might have robots that will be close to what we imagine today. that'll be awsome!

Wow. undoubtably, you have amazing talent in design! thinking through such complexities is quite a labor of love. let us know how it did in the competition!

thanks for the comments, man! the competition was actually about 4 -5 months ago, but for some strange reason i didnt post this work until now. the competition was very cool allot of great desings, i know i made it to the top 10, but since i wasnt mentioned in the top5 i can only assume i was 6th or 7th (i hope). but the actual work and the joy of thinking a developing this concept was much more important, but it is too bad i didnt win! the first prize was a workstation. but i will get it next time.!
